Cancer is a global fight, but behind every statistic is a personal story.

Last week, our colleagues across Digital Science bravely shared their experiences of survival, loss, and hope.

We thank you for taking the time to remember the people at the heart of this cause, knowing these are just a few of the millions of lives touched by cancer worldwide.🎗️

Beyond the statistics, these personal experiences are the driving force behind why we do what we do at Digital Science - championing researchers, funders, and institutions doing critical, life-saving work.

With continued investment and innovation, we remain hopeful for a future where cancer is purely a disease of the past.

Most of all, we offer our deepest gratitude to our colleagues who so graciously opened up about their personal experiences, honoring their loved ones and helping bring greater awareness for this cause. ♥️

🎗️ Every story matters, and here is the last one from our Digital Science colleague, Kristy Gjertsen, Senior Director, Digital Marketing:

"How has cancer touched my life? It took my best friend, Tracy.

Tracy lived with extraordinary purpose. She dedicated her life to global mission work with the United Nations. She brought love and light to her family in the UK and to friends around the world. She was fearless, fun, and unstoppable. She was always laughing and dancing.

After a courageous two-year fight against triple-negative breast cancer, she reached remission. Tragically, less than a year later, cancer reappeared.

Tracy never surrendered. Until her final breath, she kept fighting, fully believing she would recover and continue living her life to the absolute fullest.

Her fight didn't end in 2021—it lives on through everyone who loved her. She is my ‘why’."

"Three years ago, I lost my sister-in-law to colon cancer.

Nothing prepares you for how quickly this disease, as well as its treatment, can wear down a healthy body. She stayed optimistic and bubbly right to the end, and she fought with everything available to her: multiple surgeries, countless rounds of chemotherapy, experimental treatments, but unfortunately none of it worked.

That is why cancer research matters to me. What's already being done is remarkable in scale, but gaps remain, and underfunded corners of this field deserve far more support.

I want faster, earlier diagnosis, and I want research that takes women and underrepresented communities seriously, too much of what we know about cancer was never built with everyone in mind. Because the phrase "we don't know why" is not an answer families should have to live with."

🎗️ Every story matters. Here's the next one from a Digital Science colleague:

“I was diagnosed with very early-stage endometrial cancer a couple of years ago, after a hysterectomy performed with the specific intention of preventing cancer from developing. I found it immensely reassuring to be able to turn to the research on endometrial cancer… to help me understand the situation.

The fact that the research had not only been performed and published but also made freely available to the general public made a world of difference to me during a very frightening period of my life, and I'm tremendously grateful that it was there for me to find.”

"My sister is a two-time cancer survivor. When she was 11 years old, back in the late 1970s, she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma and had to have her leg amputated at the Children's Hospital in Boston, MA. Later in life, just about 5 years ago, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Being the champ that she is, she also survived and beat cancer! My father was also diagnosed with leukemia, and he sadly passed after 11 years of fighting.

I always wonder if, now, my sister's leg could have been saved since medical research has taken us so far. That's why it means so much to me to work at Digital Science to help others benefit from medical research."

🎗️ Every story matters. Here's the next one from our Digital Science colleague, Sarah Whipps Laffey, Account Manager, GFN:

"Cancer research matters to me because the day of my wedding rehearsal, our family received the news that my little sister, at just 20 years young, was diagnosed with cancer.

She had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. We hid the pain of that reality behind our smiles and celebrations for the next 36 hours. What we could not hide from was the next decade-plus of treatments, transfusions, ports, infections, failed treatments, viruses, hospital stays, surgeries, side effects, medicines, illnesses, trauma, and the long-term damage that followed.

Today, almost 14 years later, my baby sister is alive to tell her story, and though she often still suffers with the life-altering realities of cancer and cancer treatments, my four children get to grow up knowing their strong and incredible Aunt Morgan."

“I was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma when I was 19.

Cancer research matters to me because I'm now 31 and I'm the healthiest I've ever been thanks to researchers who work tirelessly every day to try and find better treatment options, and hopefully eventually a cure.”

🎗️ Every story matters. Here's the next one from our Digital Science colleague, Lesley Comfort Bigden, Director, GFN :

“I never got to meet my grandmother; she passed away from breast cancer before I was born. In 1987, I lost both my uncle and my grandfather, and then another uncle in 2008. This history is part of why I went on to work at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, living at the Ronald McDonald House during that time.

I met so many families I'll never forget. There was a four-year-old girl named Nikki, from Puerto Rico, who was pure life and energy despite going through a full year of treatment for a brain tumor, relapsing, and enduring a second year of treatment. I can still picture her laughing at a scary movie while holding my hand, because I hate scary movies.

There was also a young couple who spent months in surgeries and treatments with their newborn, only to lose her in the end; the grief in their eyes is something I will never forget. Living and working so close to this disease was one of the hardest things I've ever done, and the families I was lucky enough to know will stay with me forever.

Now, every day, I get to go to work and help researchers move closer to beating it.”

🎗️ Every story matters. Here’s the next one from our Digital Science colleague, Jimmy Domagala-Tang, Software developer:

“My grandfather was diagnosed with testicular cancer back when I was in high school.

The initial diagnosis terrified me since I always associated cancer with a rapid and incurable decline, but the doctors were able to inform us about how many cancer patients nowadays are able to recover and lead healthy lives.

Research into common cancers gave us 10 more years of happiness and health with him, and that’s why cancer research matters to me!”

🎗️ Every story matters. Here's the next one from our Digital Science colleague, Shannon:

“At the end of last year, I was diagnosed with breast cancer, and I was under 40. I had seen the headlines that cancer was becoming more prevalent in young adults, but I didn't think it would ever touch me. Research is more important than ever for not only treating cancer but preventing it. I'm lucky I caught mine early.

I now tell everyone I know to get screened, do regular self-checks, and always advocate for yourself and the ones you love.”
