POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
✨Hello everyone, my name is Doriangelic, future CRM archaeologist!šŸŗ I’ve always been fascinated by history and how the past shapes who we are today. Here, I’ll be sharing my journey studying archaeology, cool facts, and pieces of history that inspires me. šŸ™Œ
•
šŸ° Right now you are looking at the fort Castillo de San Marcos, St Agustine’s National Monument. The oldest masonry fortification (In the US) was made in the late 1600s after a raid destroyed a previous fort made of wood. The fort was made to defend the city of St Agustine and the Atlantic trade route. šŸ“ā€ā˜ ļø
•
Now I personally think Castillo de San Marcos is more than just a fort, it’s proof that strength can come from patience. The walls didn’t fight back; they absorbed every hit and still stood. That’s the kind of resilience I need in life but… Coquina > Concrete.🐚

Stepping into the floors of the AMNH is like stepping back 66 million years. Exhibitions to one of the most incredible fossil collections on Earth, this museum has been opened since 1869. It gives home to real skeletons of giants that once ruled the planet, not replicas, but actual fossils discovered by paleontologists across the world.
•
The museum’s collection holds over 33 million specimens, but only a fraction are on display. Its famous Titanosaur, a real cast of a 122 foot long dinosaur, is so big it barely fits in its hall and its head peeks out into the corridor like in the first picture! The AMNH also discovered the first ever complete T-Rex skeleton, which went on display in 1915.
•
My favorite part?? Everything…? 😁 BUT seeing the Titanosaur in person was an experience, it’s the largest dinosaur ever put on display. Also very much enjoyed how you can actually get to touch real fossils displayed and many more interactive stuff.

šŸ“ Centro Ceremonial Indígena de Tibes en Ponce, Puerto Rico šŸ‡µšŸ‡·
•
Tibes is one of the most important archaeological sites in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. Located in the mountains of Ponce, this ceremonial complex preserves evidence of Indigenous communities who lived here centuries before European colonization. The site was discovered in 1975 after Hurricane Eloísa in the 70s caused erosion that exposed archaeological materials and structures. Archaeological research shows that Tibes was occupied by different Indigenous cultures over time, including the Igneri and later Pre Taíno populations. The site was eventually associated with Taíno occupation as well.
•
Tibes contains 9 bateyes and 3 ceremonial plazas. The largest batey measures 76 meters long and was constructed by Pre Taíno people. The site contains one of Puerto Rico’s largest known Indigenous cemeteries with 186 human burials documented. In the exhibition you can see archaeological materials that help tell the story of the people who lived here, including ceramics, stone tools, shells, and human remains and it was one of the most fascinating parts. Another of the things that really caught my attention was seeing a skeleton displayed in a flexed/fetal position. Burial position can provide archaeologists with clues about mortuary practices and how communities treated their dead (i got the chills)
•
This history is preserved in a space that at first glance can look like nothing more than stones and grass. But those stones represent people, ceremonies, games, beliefs, burials, and communities that existed in Puerto Rico long before European contact. As someone who wants to study archaeology, being able to stand inside an actual Indigenous ceremonial landscape was honestly surreal. There’s something completely different about learning about these cultures in a classroom versus standing where those communities actually lived and practiced their traditions. Tibes is a reminder that Puerto Rico’s history did NOT begin with colonization.

šŸ“Tampa Museum Of Art
•
The Tampa Museum of Art has a permanent collection of over 660 real archaeological artifacts from ancient Greece, Rome, and Etruria. They have an exhibition called Life & Death in the Ancient World with around 400 objects displaying how ancient cultures viewed mortality and rituals. They also have an Ancient Egyptian exhibition running through and I think it’s the most fascinating part, if my iPhone 16e could cooperate 🄹
•
The Avant Garde, Remarkable Women in the Permanent Collection, exhibit highlights recent expositions by women artists. Then there is The Charles Atlas, Kiss the Day Goodbye, installation which is a 19 minute film shot from a balcony on Captiva Island, more of a contemporary art piece but still worth seeing in a dark room with nothing but emptiness and those beautiful sunset images.
•
I loved this museum overall, especially the women’s art section. The archaeological part really stood out to me (duh) especially how the artifacts connect theater, religion, and archaeology together in one space. I also learned a lot about how nudity was portrayed across different cultures and how ancient Greeks and Romans had a very different relationship with the human body compared to today.

šŸ“Ruinas del Faro de Ponderosa
•
Officially known as the Borinquen Point Lighthouse, this structure was built in 1889 by the Spanish. Made of brick, it had a tower with the light and a living area for the light keeper. Like many of the lighthouses of its time, it was pretty elaborate in architectural details. However, in 1918, there was a major earthquake in the north west of Puerto Rico that severely damaged the lighthouse beyond repair. It was abandoned, and a new concrete lighthouse was built in 1922 by the US Coast Guard in a different location, a little more to the north east in Aguadilla.
•
What remained of the ruins were left to be further destroyed by time and vandals. But still you can see the beauty that was once a mighty lighthouse. And the views through the hollow windows to the west and the ocean are beautifulll.

šŸ“North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences
•
This museum holds over 4 million specimens and some of the coolest ones are in the fossil hall. Other than fossils and dinosaurs, this museum has 4 floors displaying animals, geology, and more educational interactive sites. You’ll find everything from ancient sea creatures that once swam over North Carolina to massive dinosaur skeletons. My favorite one was seeing the diplodocus femur on displayšŸ¦•
•
The centerpiece is a 70 foot long Acrocanthosaurs, one of only two real mounted skeletons in the world! Also, North Carolina used to be underwater, so there are incredible marine fossils like giant whale bones and prehistoric shark teeth displayed on the first and second floor.
•
Walking through the fossil hall felt like going through a real timeline of evolution and life on Earth. Every bone tells a story millions of years old, and I got to stand right next to them. Part of my inner child got healed here. šŸ™‚ā€ā†•ļø

Art of the Ancient Americas Collection comprises art objects created by dozens of indigenous nations from North, Central, and South America. These artistic expressions paint a story of the daily lives, human ingenuity, spiritual concerns, and socio political histories of diverse societies that thrived long before the late 15th century arrival of the Europeans.
•
This began with gifts by collectors Howard Campbell in 1972 and Howard Phillips in 1980, which became the Collection’s core. It has grown incrementally through the past four decades with numerous individual contributions and support groups. From 1997-2023.
•
Personally I really liked seeing the amount of Vinchas they had on display, which are headdresses. Made of embossed gold, this artifact was made and used in Peru 300 CE - 700 CE, distinct in shape and style is possibly attributed to the Nazca culture.

šŸ“ National Museum of Natural History

At the National Museum of Natural History, the stories of ancient civilizations and prehistoric life come together in such beautiful ways. Take a look at the Moai statues from Easter Island, which were carved by the Rapa Nui people and reflect their complex social and spiritual beliefs; or the Archaeology Lab at the museum which is a dedicated space where scientists and researchers analyze artifacts and materials from archeological sites around the world; or maybe all countless of artifacts about Jenne-Jeno city, which explains the rise and fall of the ancient city and its civilization from Egypt, idk there’s so much!
•
Adventuring further, you’ll find exhibits that delve into the age of dinosaurs, showcasing the enormous variety of species that once roamed the Earth. The timeline also includes insights into the Ice Age, when megafauna like woolly mammoths thrived in colder climates. These exhibits highlights how climate and geography influenced the evolution of life on our planet.
•
Personally exploring this museum not only shows on display remarkable artifacts but also emphasizes the importance of archaeology in understanding our shared human history and the natural world.

šŸ“Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture
•
Walking through this museum felt like stepping into stories that were never fully told in classrooms. Every floor connects pain, resistance, and survival in a way that makes history feel personal.
•
What stood out most was how much of American progress was built on the labor, creativity, and courage of people who were denied basic human rights. This isn’t just Black history, it’s literally American history and some people struggle to see that point of view.
•
Beyond struggle, the museum honors culture, music, art, and innovation, reminding you that joy and brilliance have always existed alongside resistance, for example on the last floor (my personal favorite part!) But overall this is the kind of place that stays with you long after you leave.

If you’re in Orlando and love science, history, or anything prehistoric, you need to check out the Orlando Science Center’s archaeological style exhibits. It literally feels like stepping into a fossil dig site.
•
At the DinoDigs exhibit, you’ll walk through towering dinosaur replicas, real fossil displays, and hands on areas where you can uncover ā€œbonesā€ like a paleontologist. They show how scientists study fossils to learn about ancient ecosystems, evolution, and how Florida looked millions of years ago! šŸ¦–šŸŒ“
•
One of my favorite parts is the interactive excavation zone where you can dig, brush, and identify fossils it’s perfect for learning how archaeologists and paleontologists work in the field. You get to see how fossils are formed, how they’re preserved, and how experts piece together the past from tiny details.

šŸ“St Agustine’s Fountain of Youth
•
For centuries, people have dreamed of a spring that could restore youth and vitality, the legendary Fountain of Youth. 🌿✨
•
The myth goes way back to ancient Greece and the Middle East, where stories spoke of magical waters that could heal or make you young again. But it became world-famous in the 1500s, when Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León was said to have searched for it while exploring Florida. 🧭
•
Although historians say Ponce de León’s real mission was to claim new lands for Spain (ofc), the tale of his quest for eternal youth stuck, blending myth, exploration, and human hope. 🌊✨
•
Today, there’s even a ā€œFountain of Youth Archaeological Parkā€ in St. Augustine, Florida, where visitors can sip from a spring that’s claimed to be the one but to be honest, i would not get a sip from that water 😭
