![Design & Protest - V&A - September 2024
It’s only taken me a year to post this…. but last year I had the privilege of directing and exhibiting a short documentary for the @vamuseum with @studiobark in an instillation ‘Barricade and Beacon’, exhibiting protest architecture from direct action movements over the last decade.
It was incredible to get the opportunity to show the beauty and art behind recent protests which took these acts of civil disobedience into major news headlines.
I think this quote from Julian, one of the architects, describes it best:
“It’s a very elegant and an optimistic structure. It’s like a structure of flying bamboo sticks, which is someway a feeling that you can rise above kind of misery and desperation and crisis, as a sort of optimistic element in the design of tensegrity which is magical. It looks like it’s flying and that’s what we need to believe in, that we can achieve things we are really difficult to imagine. […] Some lorry driver who was trying to get home to his family was stuck there, he was really angry. And then he said “But it is a thing of wonder.””
Thanks to Nick Newman and Julian Maynard-Smith for trusting me with this directing and creating this film.
