Facing the sunset for 2,555 years the temple of Apollo on the island of Naxos has become a daily pilgrimage to watch the sun go down. The temple started around 530 BC by the Naxian tyrant Lygdamis, but was left unfinished when war broke out and he was overthrown. The surviving massive door called Portara stands 6 meters high and 3.5 meters wide, made of four marble monoliths weighing about 20 tons each.

The ancient statue of ‘Kouros of Apollonas’ in Naxos, Greece, lies on the ground in an ancient quarry where it was originally carved.
Dating back to the 6th century BCE, this colossal statue is over 10 meters in length and weighs around 80 tons.
The statue was never finished, whether this was because it broke and a repair was impossible, or because its completion was cancelled.
Kouros sculptures served two main purposes in ancient Greece: as grave markers to honor aristocratic youths who died young or in battle, and as votive offerings dedicated to gods in sanctuaries.
