The Exact Opposite of Okay by Laura Steven follows a teenage girl, Izzy, who wants to be a comedian. But her life takes a turn when an explicit photo of her and a politician's son leaks.

Sure, Izzy might be able to claw her way out of the hell-hole because she has money and connections. But that's not really what I'm trying to point out here. What I'm getting at is the social sanctions.

Most people still think men are naturally players, so it's just "boys being boys" when they drink, sleep around, whatever (if you disagree, congrats, you're not in the majority ✨). Women don't get that same pass. Society treats the exact same behavior completely differently depending on who's doing it.

Research backs this up too. Female teens face harsher social consequences than male teens for equivalent sexual behavior, even when you hold socioeconomic background constant.

Take an easy case: revenge porn. A guy and a girl can both be victims of the same leak. Mentally? Neither of them is fine, obviously. But socially? Not even close to the same 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've talked about this with a few people, including my boyfriend, and we keep landing on the same thing. Any victim, regardless of gender, ends up mentally messed up by it. But it's the social side that makes it so much worse specifically for women 🥀

Reading this, I could feel Izzy's despair. Her shot at her dream gets shut down because of the scandal, and she probably won't get the good future she deserves. Meanwhile her "partner in crime" walks away scot-free, not just because he's rich, but because he's a guy. by @dina.hs

#Factfulness by Hans Rosling teaches you how to actually read data. Because just like people, we need to look at things from different angles before we can reach an objective conclusion.

We live in an age where data is everywhere, and honestly it can be really overwhelming, especially when we have no idea what it means or how the numbers even work. Looking at data without critical thinking is like staring at sheet music without knowing how to read notes. You just cannot play it. And even if you tried to force it, the music would come out all wrong.

Imagine seeing a graph about something negative that keeps going up. Without critical thinking, you would instantly panic and feel like there is nothing you can do about it.

But here is the thing. Calm yourself first, then look at it from a different angle. Because when fear takes over your mind, your sense of judgment goes out the window.

I really recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn critical thinking, anyone who deals with a lot of statistics, or anyone who just enjoys warm and wholesome stories. Every tip in this book comes with a heartfelt story that makes it so much easier to digest. by @dina.hs

"Better never means better for everyone. It always means worse, for some."

Recently, there is an issue regarding US SAVE Act. Trump's SAVE Act essentially strips voting rights from women who changed their name after marriage, because their documents won't match their birth certificate. Meanwhile in Indonesia, RKUHP 2022 was flagged by Komnas Perempuan for disproportionately criminalizing women. I mean, seriously, Atwood wrote this as a warning, not a manual 😭🙏

This book took me THREE months (yes, I procrastinate; but in my defense, the writing is heavy, lots of metaphors that make you go "wait let me reread that" but in a good way?)

The world Atwood builds is so detailed and super suffocating that it lingers way after you close the book. And the scariest part.... it doesn't feel like fiction anymore these days.. I really hope the world isn't becoming more like Gilead 😔

Anyway, if you loved divergent and dystopian worlds (or if you just wanna mess your head), I'd totally recommend this book!

“Gods are ugly.” — Circe

Circe by Madeline Miller retells a Greek myth through the eyes of Circe, the daughter of Helios, the sun god. From an underestimated child to a wise woman who comes into her own by the end of the story.

I’m not really a fan of Greek mythology. The first time I read this, there were simply too many names to remember in a single chapter. But I kept going, and I’m grateful I did. Miller is an incredible storyteller. Her prose is beautiful and surprisingly easy to follow, even with hundreds of names woven into the narrative. While reading, I felt everything: rage, awe, confusion, understanding, and love.

What I loved most about Circe is her growth. She begins immature and unsure, but she learns, slowly and painfully. Abandonment does not stop her. Instead, she hones her power until she is able to make her own choices, no longer shaped by gods or heroes.

If you enjoy slow-burn stories, Greek myths, and deep character development, this book is a must-read! by @dina.hs
