My father, the quiet inventor who spent hours in the basement workshop he so proudly built. The man who worked as a biomedical engineer at Mount Sinai from age 21 until he retired. The reliable, sweet, and mischievous man who taught me to always question how and why.

The man who helped me with every science homework question. The reason I can read an abstract or medical journal and understand it. The man who taught me how to use the tools in his woodshop while building an airplane out of wood to fit my Barbie dolls.

The man who showed up. Every softball game, every track and swimming meet, every dance recital, and every musical. Whatever I was doing, he was there.

The man who sparked my love of crime documentaries and horror movies. The parent who didn’t always say the right thing but always knew how to make me laugh in moments when laughter seemed impossible. The man with terrible road rage who would beep his horn and say, “This one’s for the birds,” when someone did something dumb. The man who ordered shrimp with lobster sauce every single time we got Chinese food and never tried anything new.

The man who took too many photos of us and hung them on his walls at work and at home. The coworker who helped everyone. The dad who proudly paraded me around the hospital halls to his friends because he loved being a father and was so proud of my brother and me.

The man who I judge every man I meet against—and let me tell you, those are some really hard shoes to fill.

To my father, who taught me to work hard, ask questions, and dream big.

You will be very, very, very missed.

I have never made a post that looks like this, but today is the day.

August is not only my birthday month, but also the month my mother died. August is also Grief Awareness Month.

I hope this helps those who are grieving put their feelings into words. I hope it changes how people interact with those who are grieving. I hope it helps someone feel understood, or simply helps anyone in any way.
