Story | Exhibition of Modern Art by Six Artists

In the early 1980s, with the unfolding of reform and opening-up and the liberation of thought, Western artistic ideas began to flow into China like a rising tide.

It was within this historical context that a group of teachers and students from the Shanghai Arts & Design Academy, represented by Yu Youhan and Ding Yi, began to encounter and practice modernist painting. Through the limited catalogues and exhibitions available at the time, images and ideas from Western modern art movements such as Impressionism, Fauvism, and Expressionism deeply shook these young artists. Yu Youhan, then a teacher at the school, inspired his students through his interest in and study of Cézanne, awakening in them a desire to pursue modern painting.

One night during the Spring Festival of 1985, Ding Yi, Wang Guqing, Aide Wu, and Feng Lianghong gathered together. In conversation, the idea immediately struck them: after several years of painting abstract works, why not organize an exhibition? The next day, Yu Youhan gladly joined and wrote the exhibition preface. Qin Yifeng later joined the project, contacted the Student Union of Fudan University to secure the venue, and took charge of hand-drawing the poster and printing the invitation cards. Thus, ”Exhibition of Modern Art by Six Artists” began with an almost simple, heartfelt enthusiasm, while also, in ways perhaps unseen at the time, drawing the six artists toward the different creative paths they would later pursue.

On the occasion of Teachers’ Day, this post commemorates Yu Youhan, whose teaching helped sow the seeds of contemporary abstract art in Shanghai.

This text refers to Feng Lianghong’s 2008 essay “A Recollection of Exhibition of Modern Art by Six Artists.”

“Peer: Shanghai et Paris — L’abstraction à travers le temps” traces over a century of artistic exchange between the two cities, examining the formation, circulation, and reinvention of abstract art across different cultural contexts. Rather than presenting a one-way narrative of influence, the exhibition considers how modern artistic experience was continuously translated into Shanghai’s own path of abstraction.

In the 1980s, China’s reform and opening-up brought an influx of Western artistic ideas and movements. Within this context, a group of teachers and students from the Shanghai Arts & Design Academy, represented by Yu Youhan and Ding Yi, began to introduce Western modernism into their artistic practice through imported catalogues and exhibitions. This marked a second encounter between Chinese and Western modern and contemporary art after the generation of France-trained artists such as Wu Guanzhong, Zao Wou-Ki, and Chu Teh-Chun.

The self-organized “Modern Painting: Six-Person Group Exhibition” in 1985 was a concentrated reflection of their practice during this period. Ding Yi’s 1985 work “Breaking the Sacrifice” is presented in the section revisiting this exhibition. Its fusion of Eastern and Western abstract brushwork reveals the multiple questions the artist was engaging with at the time, from modernism and personal language to forms of abstract expression.
Another recent painting on wood panel is featured in the section “Media and Experimentation,” which explores the parallel development of pictorial language and media concepts in Shanghai abstract art after the millennium.

Exhibition: Peer: Shanghai et Paris — L’abstraction à travers le temps
Venue: Shanghai Art Museum
Dates: July 30 – October 18, 2026

Ding Yi’s solo exhibition “Cosmotechnics: Ding Yi’s Planetary Code” is currently on view at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia (@fondazionequerinistampalia) in Venice. The exhibition brings together the artist’s recent black-and-white works, including twelve paintings on wood panels and a group of stone steles.

While Ding Yi is known for his expressive use of color, he has also periodically turned toward the quiet restraint of black and white. For the artist, the black-and-white image suggests inner sedimentation and contemplation, while also gathering energy for the next stage of creation. The carved marks on the wooden surfaces resonate with the stone steles, giving tangible form to the dimension of time: it appears both in the expressive brushstrokes and incised lines of the paintings, and in the dialectic between permanence and disappearance carried by the steles.

The “cross” functions both as a symbol and as a grid. It not only structures the pictorial relationships within the works, but also extends outward as an externalization of relation itself. This networked, centerless perspective gives the works a sense of endless movement, fluctuation, and transformation.

Presented in an array within the exhibition space, the works create a viewing experience akin to moving through a “forest of steles,” entering into a poetic dialogue with the space renovated by Carlo Scarpa.

The exhibition Architecture’s Inscriptions opened at Tank Shanghai on July 9. Bringing together works by contemporary architects and artists, alongside traditional handscrolls, albums, and scholars’ rocks, the exhibition takes “inscription” as its framework to explore diverse forms of hybrid poetics across historical and contemporary practices. The exhibition runs through October 7, 2026.

The exhibition features several works by Ding Yi, including the albums Impression of Black and White and Geometric Grid, which combine an abstract visual language with the traditional Chinese album format; the work on paper Appearance of Crosses 1995-B21, marked by a sense of writing; and the canvas work Appearance of Crosses 2012-2.

Ding Yi’s Eighth Move: What Does His New Studio Look Like?

Ding Yi’s new studio is located in a former shipyard on Fuxing Island. For the artist, every studio move has been closely connected to the changes of the city around him. He describes this space, transformed from an old industrial site, as “mysterious and forgotten”—a rare place for an artist at a mature stage in his practice. It is both a container and a starting point for creativity.

”Ding Yi: Cosmotechnics“ is the publication accompanying the solo exhibition by Chinese artist Ding Yi at the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, Venice, now open within the Venice Biennale 2026. Edited by Alfredo Cramerotti (@curatorview) and Auronda Scalera (@aurondascalera), the volume focuses on the artist’s long-standing Appearance of Crosses series, approaching the cross motif as a generative system through which abstraction, perception, and spatial experience converge.

Documenting twelve newly produced paintings on basswood panels, conceived in close dialogue with Carlo Scarpa’s architectural language and installed as a contemplative “forest”, the publication conveys the installation’s rhythmic, luminous, and spatial qualities, as well as the two stone steles placed in the Giardino Scarpa, which extend the project’s symbolic and spatial field beyond the exhibition space.

Thanks to Cristiana Collu, Alfredo Cramerotti, Auronda Scalera, Kuiyi Shen, Sumayya Vally, Shane McCausland for their contribution to the catalogue.

The exhibition is on view until 22 November 2026.

“Ding Yi: The Winding Path” won the Bronze Award at the 2026 ADC Awards.

Designed by Lynn Lai (@lynnnnnlai), this catalogue accompanies the exhibition Ding Yi: The Winding Path, documenting the artist‘s spiritual “winding ascent”—inspired by the Dongba culture of the Naxi people in Yunnan—expressed through his iconic “Appearance of Crosses” visual language.

The publication’s visual system is built around the recurring zigzag motif found throughout the artworks. This “之”-shaped form represents not only the silhouette of mountain peaks and the folds of the Hengduan Range, but also mirrors the curves of a winding mountain road and the turning course of the Jinsha River—the very cradle of Naxi Dongba culture. The motif further resembles the Dongba pictograph for “road,” reflecting both the rugged migration routes of Naxi ancestors described in Dongba scriptures and the perilous soul’s journey depicted in the sacred scroll The Road to Heaven. In this way, the visual symbol enters into profound dialogue with the artist’s own spiritual search.

Structurally, the book is bound in three layered, mountain-like sections. Notably, the long scroll The Road to Heaven is presented in a zigzag-folded accordion format, extending vertically over eight meters when fully unfolded—a design consciously informed by the vertical cosmology intrinsic to Dongba culture. Throughout the catalogue, the text layout echoes the undulating mountain lines and the winding “之”-shaped trajectory, striving to integrate content and form into a cohesive visual and conceptual expression that embodies the artist’s path.

More than three decades after participating in the first major exhibition of Chinese art abroad, Ding Yi (@dingyiartstudio) is making his solo debut in Venice at Fondazione Querini Stampalia (@fondazionequerinistampalia). Titled “Cosmotechnics”—in reference to philosopher Yuk Hui’s notion that the universe and age-old value systems are shaped by technical dynamics of artmaking—the presentation traces the Shanghai-based artist’s visual language since the 1980s, gathering new and historic works that probe the generative logic of abstraction.

Ahead of his show, associate editor Louis Lu sat down with the artist to discuss anti-monuments, cosmotechnics, and ancient spatiotemporal frameworks.

‘Cosmotechnics: Ding Yi as a Planetary Code’ is now on view at Fondazione Querini Stampalia (@fondazionequerinistampalia), coinciding with the opening of the 61st International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia.

Since 1988, Ding Yi (@dingyiartstudio) has painted a single motif: the cross. One of China’s foremost abstractionists, he has made this universal coordinate marker the basis of an evolving, rigorous practice spanning nearly four decades.

Presented in dialogue with Carlo Scarpa’s architecture and garden, this exhibition brings together new and historic works alongside a series of stone steles, tracing the development of Ding Yi’s visual language within one of Venice’s most resonant spaces.

The title draws on philosopher Yuk Hui’s concept of Cosmotechnics—the idea that technical activity can unite cosmic order with moral life. Here, the cross functions not as symbol but as algorithm: a repeatable micro-gesture that makes time, attention, and relationality visible. The works transform the Area Scarpa into a contemplative passage, their rhythm and accumulation evoking the meandering structure of a traditional Chinese garden.

Curated by Alfredo Cramerotti (@curatorview) and Auronda Scalera (@aurondascalera). Presented by the Fondazione Querini Stampalia with the support of Lisson and ShanghART (@shanghartgallery).
