What will it take for Africa’s development agenda to deliver lasting, measurable change for its people?

Working with the UNDP at the intersection of partnerships, strategic policy, and communications, I am constantly reminded that sustainable development requires both a clear vision and effective execution.

While development goals are often framed around bold commitments, their success majorly depends on how resources are mobilised, allocated, and utilised. When financing is well structured and effectively delivered, it creates the conditions for meaningful change, particularly at the last mile where development outcomes are most visible and tangible.

However, financing alone is not enough. Sustainable progress requires moving beyond one-size-fits-all approaches and designing solutions that reflect each country’s unique realities, priorities, and constraints. Equally important is ensuring that resources reach the communities they are intended to serve.

This is where technical expertise, policy support, strategic partnerships, and implementation capacity become critical. Together, they contribute to a broader vision of self-reliant, resilient, and prosperous nations across Africa.

Field mission week with UNDP in Northern Uganda, Gulu and Kitgum to be precise.

I had the opportunity to join the Governance, Peace and Security (GPS) Unit on a field mission focused on community engagement, access to justice, and youth empowerment.

Our first engagement was a pre-event stakeholder meeting in Labongo Akwang Sub-county in Kitgum with the Head of Cooperation, Embassy of the Netherlands in Uganda and local community members. The discussions highlighted key achievements under the EU-UN Spotlight Initiative, particularly in the prevention of and response to gender-based violence. It was insightful to hear directly from communities about the progress made and the work that still lies ahead.

We then converged at the Kitgum High Court for the launch of the Video Conferencing Facility (VCF) System in Kitgum and Lamwo. The demonstration showcased how technology can improve access to justice, making court processes more efficient and accessible for all members of the community.

Lastly, UNDP handed over starter packs during the Girls for Climate Action initiative ceremony at the Gulu District Council Hall. This initiative reflects confidence in the innovative ideas of young girls and encourages them to become champions for environmental protection and climate action within their communities.

This was a rewarding experience witnessing partnerships, innovation and community-driven initiatives that creates meaningful impact across Northern Uganda.

120+ days into my UNDP - @undp_uganda journey through the #afywl program, and it has already expanded my perspective, strengthened my capabilities and shaped me in truly rewarding ways.

I am especially grateful for the intentional focus my Resident Representative, @nwannevo and Supervisor, Dr. David Maina, have placed on my learning and development, consistently encouraging me to take on new challenges, build across different units, and fully immerse myself in the experience. What stands out most is not just the work, but the people, the conversations, and the moments where ideas begin to feel like impact.

I have had the privilege of working across Strategic Policy, Partnerships, Resource Mobilisation and Communications, often switching hats within the same week.

Some moments I keep coming back to:

-> Gathering data to inform Uganda’s national budget to enable evidence-based discussions aimed at strengthening public expenditure planning.
-> Contributing to resource mobilisation efforts from donor mapping and funding pipeline tracking to supporting strategic positioning, which has offered me first-hand knowledge of how ideas are translated into funded, scalable impact.
-> Learning through partnership engagements with leaders like Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi (Minister of State for Youth & Children Affairs), Mr. Geoffrey Kitakule (Rotary District Governor), Rainer Frauenfeld (Director, UNOPS), and Megan Richie (Country Director, SNV).
-> Supporting youth & women-focused initiatives like The Pearl Marketplace, The Women Finance Fair, and the Women in STEM Leadership Bootcamp.
-> Supporting ongoing engagements and partnerships around AFCON 2027 for sustainable economic development.

Alongside this, I have been intentional about growth, completing UNDP core courses, the AI Horizon Accelerator, and AI Week sessions while advancing skills in Results-Based Management, Blockchain and Project Management (CAPM).

120+ days in, I am grateful, and I know this is just the beginning.
