Last week, Chaka @chakavanessad and I had the opportunity to experience something truly special.

Amazing food. Incredible wine. Meaningful conversations. But what made the evening unforgettable was the people.

A huge congratulations to @berchelrd for bringing this vision to life. You could feel the intention behind every detail. @fuckyoumean created a menu that honored Caribbean flavors in a way that was both thoughtful and unforgettable, while @mauricescarlett artwork gave us something to reflect on long after each course.

Thank you to Asmara @creativegroundsdc opening such a beautiful space and ending the evening with some of the best coffee we’ve had. It was the perfect finish to a perfect night.

It was an honor for The People’s Market to contribute fresh ingredients alongside so many talented creatives. This was more than dinner—it was community, culture, conversation, and the reminder that some of the best experiences happen when people gather around a table with intention.

This was just the beginning. More @dinners__served events are on the way, and if this first one is any indication, you’ll want to stay tuned. by @dinners__served

Here’s the menu for this Sunday’s intimate dinner. Guests can expect intentionality and care while going on a really fun ride; eyes interacting with bold colors, tastebuds jumping from the unique spices and enjoying moments of familiarity with traditional Caribbean dishes we all love.

I’ll say it because he’s too humble to, but @fuckyoumean is one of the most gifted chefs I’ve met. He’s cooked in some of the city’s most renowned kitchens alongside some very remarkable chefs. His range is impressive from fast to fine dining; he approaches each experience with the same level of passion & care for creating the final product.

When thinking about the team I wanted to build around “Dinner’s Served”, Lu was front of mind when it came to the lead chef. I’ve seen first hand his attention to detail, drive for perfecting his craft and ability to keep a level head in some high stress environments. To this point, I’ve known him to mainly be in a supportive, more behind the scenes role but wanted to give him the opportunity to truly highlight his skills in the kitchen.

Guests for the debut dinner service, taking place this Sunday, can expect a very thoughtful but playful menu. Luis is honoring some of the flavors of his Latin heritage while merging the Caribbean dishes Maurice & I were raised on.

Asmara and @creativegroundsdc have been a constant as I continue to navigate the art landscape in DC. My first feature in an exhibition was on display at Creative Grounds in the winter of 2024. It was during this show I got to see first hand how much of a champion Asmara is for the local art scene. She uses the word steward to describe her role in the area as a business owner, advocate and community leader.

Whether it’s been during my countless visits to catch up with friends, shop over the inventory of artisanal goods while enjoying a refreshing beverage or to take meetings with collaborators, Asmara has always been there with a welcoming smile & tons of insight. Partnering with fellow artists, musicians, small business owners and youth organizations, Asmara will continue to be a steady bridge for the creative community in DC.

We wanted to take a moment to shed some light on the wonderful work that Asmara is doing with Creative Grounds. In our recent interview led by @christenwhitaker, we discuss her outlook on stewardship, what community means to her, and how her Eritrean heritage continues to hold her in this work. I first became aware of Maurice’s work last year by way of exploring Baltimore’s staple third space @athooperhouse & his “Visceral” solo exhibition that was on display during my visit. I was instantly drawn into the contrast of his mysterious dark figures and bold colors that brought each piece together.

It was an easy decision to partner with Maurice for our first dinner service. During the event, guests can expect an art exchange that gives a unique glimpse into his world. Maurice will share insights behind his process, his references and how his work has been shaped by his Baltimore & Jamaican roots.
