With rising geopolitical tensions and an evermore complicated international landscape I thought about all those watching. All of our allies and partners, all part of a larger rules based international order, a phrase that our not so friendly counterparts find interchangeable with western hegemony—a system that needs to be challenged. I thought about those nations in Southeast Asia, for whom those boosters illuminating the Santa Barbara coastline that foggy night must’ve been a beacon of hope; America’s promise to defend vulnerable democracies around the world made manifest. With the stakes that high, I was more concerned with whom couldn’t attend but wish they could’ve. I thought about my mother and how proud she would’ve been, how happy she would’ve been to see it. I missed her terribly. The team pretended not to notice as I wiped away my tears.

At his retirement ceremony he opened with, “They say your most important moments flash before your eyes when you’re facing death. When that time comes I hope this moment is one of them, I would be eternally grateful.” This sums up Lt Col Aguirre’s character and how seriously he took his career. Super late... but It was an incredible opportunity to have served at Vandenberg AFB. To say that I learned would be an understatement. My words are far too hollow to capture what this team of people has accomplished and the impact they’ve had on me.

I realized we are at the threshold of the 3rd decade of the 21st century. 2019 was a year with many ups and downs but I learned something special: life isn’t promised tomorrow. A few days ago my mother was taken from me. I know many of you have reached out but I am beyond broken and had my phone off for the past few days. She’s my foundation. She’s my #1 fan. She’s my team captain and the reason I am where I am today. She instilled in me to be loyal and faithful to those precious to me. To keep them close and to never let go.
