“Every opportunity I have now began at The Mecca.”Ilahi Creary (B.S. ’22) was recently crowned Miss Black United States 2025, becoming the first Black woman representing Massachusetts to win a national title across any pageant system. She was driven to the Black United States pageant system because of its principles of scholarship, leadership, mentorship, community impact, and sisterhood.Creary first fell in love with pageants after winning Miss Black and Gold for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated @betachapteralphas at Howard University.“Doing Miss Black and Gold Howard kind of showed me a microcosm of what you could do with a platform—with people backing you and supporting you and funding you,” Creary said.As a first-generation graduate, she also credits Howard for instilling in her the spirit of trusting herself and knowing that what’s meant for her won’t pass her by.That led the biology major and chemistry minor to do two gap years after graduation. She worked at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and became a published researcher before getting a full ride to Harvard, where she is pursuing an MPH in public health and policy. Her advice to others: “Don’t let anybody tell you that you can’t accomplish something. Don’t let people project their fears onto you. Be as delusional as you want about your dreams.”Read more about her journey to the crown with the 🔗 in our bio.#howarduniversity #missblackunitedstates by @diosa.sol

Ilahi was a highly active student during her time at Harvard, serving as a student ambassador, joining the student government, and working as a research assistant for faculty member John McDonough. We are looking forward to welcoming Ilahi and the rest of the Class of 2026 to Harvard Chan School’s global community of alumni in just two weeks! by @diosa.sol

Power beyond the podium, in practice. From moderating the “Art, Influence, and the Work That Follows” panel about Advocacy in the Arts to standing alongside mayors and leaders shaping cities in real time, this weekend was a reminder that influence is only the beginning. What matters is the work that follows. @harvard @harvardkennedyschool #advocacymatters by @diosa.sol
