Tomorrow marks 3 years since I quit my job as a Creative Director @freeform to pursue the freelance Director life of my dreams.

I’ve seen highs, lows and mids. Grateful for it all.

Kicking off the celebrations with a look back at some of the work I’ve been honored to direct.

Let’s keep the party going 🎉 by @directedbyallison

HAPPY SPADURA DAY!!! Four years ago today @spadura_show was birthed into the world at the iconic @dynastytypewriter - I went to the premiere and was so profoundly moved. I laughed hard, cried a bit, thought deeply, then laughed even harder. @daheliofficial had brilliantly transmuted the pain she had experienced through infertility, IVF and the absurdity of today’s baby industrial complex into not just punchlines, but a show that has made so many women like me feel seen, held and healed through humor. I absolutely loved it.

The stage show went on to tour the country, winning award after award. Dahéli and producer @greatviewproductions put their whole selves into making this show, and the healing process it provided, a success. Then, the time came to do the taping. When Dahéli asked me to direct the comedy special, I think I cried. A story I feel so passionate about at the helm of my dear friend whom I love? Let’s f*ing go!

There’s something so courageously human about comedy specials that reshape the painful parts of life. I took inspiration from similar specials from greats like @shitfromkiran and @therealbaddiel - and went for it.

We returned to Dynasty Typewriter, the place where it all started. 6 cameras under the eye of DP @cactus.eyelash - and the most passionate, kind and kick-@ss crew (including my mother @deborahjonescaviness who helped in the art department!) - we made it happen.

SPADURA, the film made its rounds on the film festival circuit, most notably @americanblackfilmfestival and @paffnow It was incredible to witness audiences reactions live. Again and again, people kept saying how much the story resonated, how glad they were to hear someone talk about these things - to laugh about these things! The film has been so embraced.

And now, here we are celebrating 4 years since its stage debut - with SPADURA available to stream on @amazon Prime and @appletv

This feels so good in my heart.

I’d like to invite you to celebrate with us by streaming SPADURA this weekend and leaving a review. Link to stream in my bio.

Fun fact, SPADURA’s birthday is also mine and @arvind.david ‘s anniversary. We’re 4 years old, too! 🥰

Seven years ago today, I became a Californian. I settled into my new home, my mother by my side, after a two and a half week road trip across the country - what was known as the “Alli to Cali Tour”. Unforgettable memory. Unexpected discoveries along the way. I am so happy here. Let’s keep it going! by @directedbyallison

I’ll be honest, when my beloved set out to write a crime thriller set in London in 1905, I was a bit concerned I wouldn’t connect to it. No shade, thrillers just aren’t my thing. How delightfully relieved am I to read how elegantly he has deepened and subverted the genre with rich texture, cross-cultural nuance, wit, heart and so much fire. I’m hooked! For every ambitious threshold-dweller grappling with the meaning of home - for every insider-outsider…this one is for us.
@arvind.david - to say I’m proud of you doesn’t seem to do this feeling justice. Congratulations, baby.

This Fourth of July weekend, this amazing, talented group of people came together to read my new play, Black Magic, which tells the forgotten story of America's first magician, the extraordinary Richard Potter.

Born of an enslaved woman in 1783, Potter went on to become not only America's first native-born magician but arguably the most famous celebrity of his age, touring all 22 states, playing sold-out houses in the Deep South and bringing magic into the lives of those who needed it. Yet he is largely forgotten in history. This 4th of July, reclaiming his memory seems a pretty good way to celebrate.
