As the season of witches approaches, we find ourselves reflecting on the monstrous feminine: a figure that has haunted folklore and horror narrative since the beginning of time.

And this is something that deeply fascinates and scares us at the same time: those who give life have always inspired more horror than those who take it.

This is what we came to think about, standing in front of a place that knew it well.
In the Cannaregio sestiere, stands the Pio Loco delle Penitenti, a refuge founded in 1705 for “penitent sinners”: women who had given public scandal and needed to be housed, reformed, and put to honest work.
To be admitted, they had to be between 12 and 30 years old, Venetian, not pregnant, and removed from their sinful life for at least three months.
We thought about this for a long time.
