It’s OK to want more. It's never too late or too much!

As a recovering box-checker—good school, good career, good husband, good family—I’m here to say: none of it means much if you’re not good with yourself.

There’s a creative in all of us. And looking back, mine was always whispering to me: seek joy, choose pleasure, follow purpose.

I’m beyond humbled to be walking this path with the Tyler Perry Studios Dream Collective. And I’m proud of the version of Jess—five years ago—who began to ask the real questions:

✨ What do you want from this life?

✨ Not what’s expected. Not what’s applauded. What do you want?

I’m forever grateful to the Universe for the musings and muses that guide me—and for the bravery to finally listen.

Jess spent years as a TIME journalist telling other people’s stories, and now she writes and directs her own. She’s the creator of the Queerties-nominated series MOONIE, was named a Top 100 Emerging Director by Tyler Perry Studios, and is a former Board President of Roots of Development, a Haitian grassroots organization. We are so excited to have Jess help Tara tell her story.

4️⃣ years ago today, my sister, @directjess and I, through our production company, The Phases of Moonie Productions🌙, did something that felt equal parts crazy, bold, risky, exciting, adventurous, and completely liberating.

We created MOONIE, a Black queer comedy inspired by the everyday humor of Seinfeld, but told through our own lens and lived experiences.

What started as an idea became something so much bigger than we ever imagined.

🎬 Raised $25,000 in just one month while we were in production! 🤯 Thats the level of faith we have in ourselves & our projects! 🙏🏾
🏆 Nominated for a @queerty Award for Best Web Series
🌍 Official Selection at 14 domestic and international film festivals & we were screened at the world famous @chinesetheatres in Hollywood! 🎬
🎭 I acted on screen for the very first time.
🎥 My sister directed her very first web series.
💛 We built something from the ground up with the support of an incredible community.

So why am I sharing this?

Because I want to remind you that the life you want doesn’t begin when you have everything figured out. It begins the moment you decide to bet on yourself.

You are capable of doing hard things.
Give yourself permission to take risks.
You don’t need to know every step before taking the first one.
You can leave your comfort zone.
You can create something that doesn’t exist yet.
You can be a kid again. Play. Create. Laugh. Dream BIG.

The most exciting life isn’t the safest one. It’s the one you intentionally choose.

✨ Choose YOU.
✨ Choose your dreams.
✨ Choose courage over comfort.
✨ Choose the life that lights you up.
