Painted in and around Kerner’s rural Pennsylvania home, the works emerged during a period of personal loss. Moving between light and darkness, growth and decay, Kerner considers landscape as something shaped by shifts in light, season, mood, and circumstance. The exhibition centers on ideas of motherhood, mortality, acceptance, and renewal, finding beauty within the continual cycle of endings and beginnings.

Across the exhibition, familiar landscapes shift with season, light, memory, and circumstance. Kerner describes the body and landscape as intertwined: “We were landscape — breathing, growing, falling, fading.” The paintings ultimately locate renewal within that cycle, allowing light to emerge from experiences of loss.

We’re pleased to announce that Dirkse/Prim Gallery now represents Carrie Mae Smith. Smith lives and works in upstate New York. Inspired by antiques and food culture, Smith often paints her personal collections of vintage china, historic objects, and culinary delicacies. The daughter of a butcher, she supported her artistic practice early on working as a private chef on Martha’s Vineyard. Smith’s works serve as symbols of class, labor, friendship, tradition, love, and utility.

We look forward to presenting her first solo exhibition with the gallery in February 2027.

Somewhere in Between explores the perpetual movement of nature, with compositions revealing moments which imply formation and ruin of material. The exhibition title calls to the evolution of our environment: ever-changing, transforming between phases, spanning as far as we can see and beyond. The media choices for this body of work similarly echo the title, as these works fall somewhere in between drawing, painting, and sculpture. Throughout the work, layers of charcoal, paint, and shaped canvas extrusions invite viewers to attentively look and consider how our surroundings are affected by time and nature.
