Tape Op Magazine.
I had big goals when I started in โ€˜06, and one was to be in Tape Op, THE creative recording and production magazine. Itโ€™s not an easy publication to get into, and I assumed that since I operate by my own quirky rules, it would be unlikely. Well, it was because of that uniqueness that they reached out, having heard my work. Itโ€™s been a journey of discovery ever since, with an amazing team now beside me. I had no idea what I was doing, but I knew what I liked, and how I wanted things to sound. I knew how to put it all together sonically, even with the limitations gear-wise. How this guitar should sound and be played, and where it should go, how the drums should be played, and where they should go, etc. I stumbled into the โ€œproducerโ€ thing, a term now overused in today's TikTok universe, but be that as it may. My life changed when issue #92 hit the stands, because it meant that this was, somehow, what I was meant to do, and that I no longer had to sell myself. My BIGGEST goal was, and still is, to show my daughter that with tenacity and a lot of hard work, you can achieve anything. Donโ€™t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. I have this memory of sitting in a friends studio in Woodstock NY in 2004, a stack of Tape Op mags by the console. As I flipped through the pages, I thought, yeah, I can do this. That friend, a legendary musician/producer told me that I couldnโ€™t do it, and that I lacked knowledge and the tools. He wasnโ€™t wrong, but if I listened to him then, I wouldnโ€™t be doing it now. Weโ€™re still friends, and I enjoyed putting it in his face lol. You must find what makes you unique, and unlearn the rules, to an extent. Iโ€™m now an occasional contributing writer for Tape Op, having written a few features. Iโ€™ve been long planning a piece on one of my heroes, producer James William Guercio (Chicago, Dennis Wilson, Beach Boys, etc) and his beloved Caribou Ranch in Nederland, Colorado, a place and town near and dear to meโ€ฆLast pic at AES Convention with Tape Op Crew and their DF shirts!

2026 New England Music Awards nom for โ€œProducer of the Yearโ€, shucks yโ€™all!
Iโ€™ve been nominated in this category five times over the years, but have yet to โ€œwinโ€, even though itโ€™s never had an impact on me or my work either way. These things are nothing more than pure fun, though Itโ€™s nice to know the work is recognized by whoever makes these decisions. So thank you! A vote for me is also a vote for my team at Dirt Floor.
Congrats to the following artists and bands whoโ€™ve worked with us at Dirt Floor, and some that just get my vote for being undeniably awesome...
Solgyres, Deer Tick, 92 Winona, The Wolff Sisters, Carlin Tripp, Bryan Titus, Ward Hayden, One Time Weekend, Bronze Radio Return, Autumn Hollow and Bow Thayer...
Vote at the link in bio, if not for me, then for whoever you think is most deserving.
Thanks,

Great week in the studio, with lots of keyboard overdub action. Continued work with Jeff Tuohy, on his new record. Thanks to Ben Stivers (Lyle Lovett and His Large Band) for bringing those tasty chops! Oliver was everywhere too, as you can see๐Ÿถ taken in Connecticut by @dirtfloorrecordingstudio

Suno is great for people who donโ€™t care about music, and those who might not have the budget to make it the right way. There are many right ways, and none of them are found within these apps. To be clear, the right way is using your creativity. The rest is what the rest is. A few years ago when those AI Beatles mashups started to show up, they were mildly entertaining, but no more than that. Certainly not something that anyone would want to put on and listen to as real. Itโ€™s like, now we see all of these logos and shit that have been created by ChatGPT, and they look dreadful. Like, do you not think for a second that we donโ€™t know how you made that shit? It makes you and your โ€œbrandโ€ look cheap, and IT looks like shit. Thatโ€™s what Suno is to me and to so many. I will hire an artist every single time. I will hire a photographer every single time. Whatโ€™s better than having people create something for you using all of the knowledge that they have gained through putting in hard work? Youโ€™re not gonna get that any other way, sorry. Iโ€™ve never felt that my livelihood was put in danger because of this stuff, and I still donโ€™t, because millions of people still want the real, and that will never change. My teenage daughter, 18 years old, cannot be bothered with AI or anything even remotely close to it. Which is to say, I think we are all gonna be just fineโ€ฆ update. As expected, there have been a few negative comments here, which I suppose I invited simply by posting an opinion. I was hoping for some possible enlightenment, but of course, as expected, just a few idiots with zero constructive stuff to add to the conversation. If you scroll through, youโ€™ll find them, they are entertaining, and only continue to drive home my belief that, it really is just for morons who have no creative ability whatsoever. taken in Connecticut by @dirtfloorrecordingstudio
