Our new album on room40 pre-order available at:

https://room40.bandcamp.com/album/beyond-the-loudspeaker

These recordings come from the March 2024 exhibition of Beyond the Loudspeaker at Newcastle Contemporary Art (UK). The gallery’s large, reverberant space is captured through a series of spontaneous “spot” recordings, which were later layered to create a kind of meta-document of the installation. Like the installation, the album should be thought of as a space in which the listeners are invited to navigate the dense sonic environment themselves, shaping their own auditory journey.

Beyond the Loudspeaker is a series of performance-installations by Dirty Electronics and Tim Shaw that investigates how to create electronic sound without relying on conventional loudspeakers.

Amplified Eargong got a run out recently for @simultan_org with @tim4shaw and @cafeotodalston for Tudor100 curated by @paulpurgas

The Eargong is one of Hugh Davies ideas for an instrument made of two bits of string tied to an oven shelf or grill. The string is then wrapped around a finger of each hand with the fingers being pressed into the ears to make the gong-like sound of the shelf audible. These resonating found objects have much in common with Tudor’s seminal work Rainforest.

Here the Eargong is amplified by a #geofone and struck by a chaotic beater made from a clothes peg, flexible shaft and stepper motor.

Guitar pickups are also used to reveal the ‘inner workings’ of the motor.

⚡Electricity made audible, sound given body. Almost all electronic music eventually passes through a loudspeaker. Beyond the Loudspeaker starts by taking it away.

Dirty Electronics @dirtyelectronics and Tim Shaw @tim4shaw work instead with an unruly collection of DIY instruments: sparks and plasma, Franklin Bells, a Jacob’s Ladder, motors, car horns, telephone bells and other electromechanical devices that set objects into vibration. The architecture and acoustics of the space become part of the system too — sound is produced through electricity, materials and the room itself, in what they describe as “a wayfaring journey through the danger zone of high voltage and low technology.”

Developed as a series of performance-installations, Beyond the Loudspeaker brings together years of shared work between John Richards and Tim Shaw across electronic music, DIY electronics, sound art and site-responsive practice. Following performances across Europe and a residency in Japan, the duo will also release a new album under the same title on Room40 later this year.

On 24 September, they will open the live programme of SIMULTAN XXI.

Music for Radios (2026)

The radio is thought of as not only a one-way vehicle of communication, but a two-way transmitter and receiver. Bespoke electronic devices, quasi-instruments transmit frequencies (EMFs) that are picked up by radios in the performance space. An electromagnetic field is created. The performers improvise with and within this field. The work also explores sonic wayfaring, where performers become wayfarers responding to the perceptual and material characteristics of the environment they move through; they pause, meander and take influence from the specifics of these places.

A third dimension of this piece is how this field or environment is represented on radio. Microphones are placed in and around the space to capture different sonic perspectives and idiomatic qualities of location. A form of inverted sound diffusion takes places as the sound is mixed down for radio.
