Introducing our next performer for Disability Culture Cabaret...Damon Modarres @DamonModarres!Damon Modarres is a Persian-American musician based in the DMV. Influenced by artists like Brent Faiyaz, Aaliyah, and the Weeknd, Damon blends the energy of Y2K pop with the introspection of alternative R&B. With local music collective 242, Damon has performed in concerts, festivals, and fundraisers throughout the region, sharing stages with Duckwrth, Smino, Destin Conrad, Tinashe and many local musicians. In a new Disability Culture Currents piece, Anita Cameron, a long-time disability justice activist who was part of the fight for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), reflects on the disparities in access between white disabled communities and disabled communities of color — despite it being nearly four decades since the passage of the ADA. From Anita: “Too often, we talk about disability and disability issues as if disabled people are all white. A queer, neurodivergent creator who puts the awe in autisim, Lilith’s work explores pleasure, identity, and the beauty of letting yourself get a little messy. Introducing our first headliner for Disability Culture Cabaret...Dev Hill @MyDisabledDanceLife!Dev is a visually impaired professional dancer, teacher, choreographer, and accessibility advocate. Originally from Dallas, Texas, they currently live in Washington, D.C., where they work as a freelance dance artist and educator. They currently work with disabled children throughout the DC metropolitan area and have collaborated with the DC Public School system. They have also served as an accessibility advocate and educator with the Dance Education Equity Association, contributing as an educational guide and consultant. Queer disabled joy is revolutionary, and we all could use some right now. Crip the Law is delighted to be a community partner of the third annual Disability Culture Cabaret, hosted by @disabilityculturelab and co-hosted by @crushingcolonialism and @transformgender. It will be a night of liberatory Queer, Deaf, and Disabled joy, produced by the incredible @ynikayuag. This is a night of embodied liberation expressed through Queer, Deaf, and Disabled art -- including music, drag, dance, comedy, burlesque, and more. It's also a chance to be together in community! This year we will be at @sycamoreoak in DC, a beautiful new community space in Congress Heights that we are thrilled to partner with for the event. This week, we're diving into how anti-Black racism is disabling. From the disabling impacts of state violence and incarceration to the stress of discrimination, disabled Black folks sit at the intersection of multiple forms of oppression. Even within the disabled community, disabled Black people are marginalized and sidelined in favor of white narratives.
