It’s All-Star time again…..BIG DEAL! I’ve never seen so many bums in the Home Run Hitting Contest or in the actual game but,that’s all we have left,I guess. Gone are the days of games with the lineups shown here. These cards are from the 1978 O-Pee- Chee set and feature the starting lineups from the 1977 game. For some reason,Richie Zisk didn’t get the All-Star designation,in both the O-Pee-Chee and the Topps set. These are the “1996 Leaf Grass Roots” insert set. There were 20 cards in this set featuring the top runners in the NFL during the 1996 season. The fronts feature a simulated artificial turf look and feel background. The Montreal Canadiens,Canada’s real team,are into the second round of the playoffs. I don’t know if the next round could be any tougher than the first but,I guess we’ll find out soon enough. A lot has been made of the fact that the Habs could only manage 9 shots in the game,0 in the second period. Hayden “Sidd” Finch was a 28 year old,fictional baseball player created for a famous April Fools day hoax,in Sports Illustrated,in 1985,by writer George Plimpton. The article was about a mysterious,reclusive pitcher in the New York Mets organization. It was said that he trained in a Tibetan monastery and played the French horn. It was also said that he could throw a fastball 168 MPH!!! Unfortunately,he was torn between his spiritual life and professional baseball. A week after the Sports Illustrated article,it was revealed that the first letters of the sub-headline spelled out “Happy April Fool’s Day!” Sidd’s real name was Joe Berton who posed for the photos in the article. The hoax is considered one of the greatest in sports journalism history. After the article appeared,the Mets offices were inundated with calls from fans wanting to know more about their newest “savior!” Go figure Mets fans.
