Just sharing a heads up for all those with whom I’m in regular or semi-regular contact. As of tomorrow I’m dipping out of here for a little experimental social media fast. I’m not sure how long it will last, but if you need/want to get a hold of me DM for alternate forms of communication, otherwise, adios hermanos y hermanas. ✌🏼🤓🖤 by @disappointedarms

HAPPY MAY DAY In most of the world, for almost 140 years May 1 has represented a celebration of the struggles of labor and social movements. Yet in the United States where May Day began, this day is largely unknown to most working people, especially those outside of traditional organized labor, its historic meaning steadily buried under the debris of a one-sided ruling class assault on U.S. workers, which has weakened our organizations and with them our institutional class memory. Today, as we enter what looks to be a prolonged and even more vigorous attack on what remains of labor’s past victories, we are experiencing an awakening and renewal of struggle. From New York City to Oakland, California and many communities in between, people are waking up to class consciousness. May Day as a labor holiday began in the context of the 19th century struggle for the eight-hour work day. That fight, beginning as early as 1867, wouldn’t be won until the 1940s, and has to be continuously fought for again and again. And before you ask, “Isn’t that why we have Labor Day in the summer?” No, that day was chosen in order to divert the energy and passion associated with May 1 by President Grover Cleveland as he rejected calls to designate the day a national holiday to honor the labor of the nation’s workers. His administration struck a deal with the more accommodating sections of the labor bureaucracy to de-policitize this “International Workers Day” by moving it to the first Monday of September, now known as Labor Day. Anyway, enough of the long-winded history lesson. I hope you’re celebrating, and if not I hope you at least take time during your scrolling to do a little more research on the history of this day, AND the story of 1886 and the Haymarket Martyrs. 🤓🤓🤓Cheers to all the homies who’ve held me up when I felt like chucking it in! Especially at a time when dealing with the state of the world seems much more tolerable in a drug and alcohol-induced fugue. Much love! by @disappointedarms
