In this Newport Beach home, the team at DISC Interiors, led by David John Dick and Krista Schrock, layered warmth and contrast into a palette rooted in wood, stone and plaster. Lighter hues, vintage rugs and sculptural furnishings soften the architecture, while unexpected shapes and textures add movement throughout the interiors. The balance of rustic materials and refined details creates spaces that feel relaxed yet elevated, allowing the architecture and surrounding landscape to remain the focus.

Cadence, resonance, flow, movement—some of the same elements that make a popular song so catchy easily apply to a well-designed dwelling. And for this Newport Beach residence, conceived for homeowners with a passion for music, dance, performance arts and entertaining, architect Eric Olsen and designers David John Dick and Krista Schrock made sure to hit just the right beat. “The architecture has a rustic edge that feels kind of rock ‘n’ roll, kind of John Varvatos,” muses Dick, gesturing to the home’s rugged limestone and cedar—materials repeated both inside and out. “But in a good juxtaposition, many of the furnishings and fabrics are soft and light. As you enter, you immediately see how those notes pull together.”

New project in Santa Ynez, California by DISC Interiors, a family home set among the wine country and rose gardens.

Inspired by the quiet character of traditional English farmhouses, the home was designed around relaxed family time, with an emphasis on craftsmanship, natural materials, and a sense of permanence. Traditional woodworking and handcrafted oak and painted cabinetry are layered with plaster walls, French limestone flooring, polished nickel, brass, and bronze finishes, and muted green and pink marble.
