GRRRL CRUSH IS 10 🎈Ten years of championing women, trans and non binary people in music and beyond 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️

We started off doing punk gigs in the pub and have grown in lots of different directions over the years, but the ethos is and always has been the same. This feels like a good moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who has supported us, played for us, partied with us, whatever. We’ve had A LOT of fun. Grrrl Crush began in 2016 when there wasn’t much out there in the way of parties for queer people, and it’s been really beautiful to see so many more parties pop up and grow wings over the years 😍

We have an exciting announcement incoming - but in the meantime, here are some photos from parties and gigs and workshops over the years featuring some of our most iconic acts to get you in the mood. Who can you spot? 👀

Over the flippin’ moon to be collaborating with good pals @vadge.badges as part of our 10th birthday celebrations.

@nemsartonstudio is an old friend and someone whose work I have admired for a long time so I asked if she’d create some limited edition Grrrl Crush Vadge Badges for the occasion - and lo and behold, here they are 😍

We’re down to the last but not least announcement. It’s me! Bob. The face behind the parties for the last 10 years.

Myself and some pals created Grrrl Crush because we couldn’t find a space that represented us at the time, we were a group of queer women who wanted to put on punk gigs and listen to live music. So we went ahead and built it, and they came, and it turned out the LGBTQ+ community needed it just as much as we did - both in Edinburgh and in Bristol. So much has changed over the last 10 years but I can say for sure that Grrrl Crush helped me to accept myself and express myself in a way that felt authentic for me. I really hope it did the same for other people too. I’ve had a blast throwing parties for you lot and I’m proud to have booked some of my favourite artists and line ups. 10 years of gigs and every single one has been women / non binary / trans led, with the exception of a few allies. Turns out it can be done, folks - take note, promoters 👀

I’m going to take a step back from parties for a bit while I work out where we sit in the beautiful queer landscape of Bristol. I’ll still be doing DJ lessons and workshops here and there, so keep your eyes peeled for those and hit me up if you want a 1-1. I just need a wee break for now. But not until I’ve busted out my Dolly Parton warm up set and my Prodigy Power Hour at @radicalroastersuk this Friday. 7pm - 10pm. We’re running the event in partnership with @bristolsoberspaces so you get unlimited cups of tea with your ticket courtesy of @radicalroastersuk PLUS decor by prop mastermind @ramonaevebigwood and limited edition @vadge.badges by the legendary @nemsartonstudio 🔥

Another collab of the decade incoming 👀 I met @ramonaevebigwood randomly at Boomtown in 2018. I was sitting in my tent, opened the zipper, and there she was with a double rainbow above her head (swipe to the end for the exact moment). Turns out she was a creative genius and I had just met who would turn out to be one of my favourite humans in the entire universe. Ramona - aka the Queen of Props - and I have been talking about collaborating on an event for a long time, so we thought the 10th birthday was the perfect opportunity to finally do it. Here are some teasers of what to expect - the first few pics are of our photo shoot from the car park at Balter. 💅

This era of artwork marks the transition from Edinburgh to Bristol, and spans 2017-2020.

We started to outgrow The Mousetrap so we moved to club nights at @mashhouse. We began a series called GIRLS CAN’T DJ and booked a bunch of cool people, including a double bill feat. @thehoneyfarm and @mybadsister, and for our last party before I upped sticks, we booked one of my favourite artists of all time - Lone Taxidermist (still one of my favourite ever performances).

When I arrived in Bristol I had no idea what I was doing, I’d only visited once before so my knowledge of the scene wasn’t great. I asked around a few venues, but all of them came back with the same questions - what kind of audience can you pull, how many tickets can you sell. At this point, I had no clue, I just needed a venue that would take a punt on me. During 2018, I was working as a KP at @thegallibristol so I did a couple of Thursday parties there, one of them feat. an iconic line up of @holly_flo_lightly @me_madly & @zahraoshea.

A few months later I was introduced to @punka_bristol promoter @stoo_what and we decided to throw a party together at @exchangebristol for International Women’s Day 2018. It went down a treat. Exchange has held a special place in my heart ever since because they were so supportive and made us feel at home by giving us the space to do what we wanted without any pressure.

In 2019 I did my own party there and booked @mandidextrous_23 to headline alongside @mybadsister. I remember that night so well like it was yesterday. I stood at the back of the room with a big fat smile on my face watching all the beautiful LGBTQ+ ravers bathed in the Grrrl Crush coloured lighting and thought ‘YAAAS’!

That was the party that made me realise there was space for us on the Bristol scene, and maybe people needed it just as much as I did. Grrrl Crush has always been more than just a night for me. It has acted as a safe space that has helped me find myself and understand who I am as a queer person and I hope it’s done the same for others.

UPDATED ARTWORK ALERT 🚨🚨🚨

We’re very proud to be doing this event in partnership with @bristolsoberspaces. I DJed for one of their parties last year and it was one of my most joyful sets to date. I smashed a whole bottle of coconut water and got given a rider of fruit and nuts and sweeties and it was loads of fun.

Drugs and alcohol play such a huge part in the music industry - and in DJ and rave culture - it can be really hard to escape. I love that @bristolsoberspaces exists, it’s such an important initiative and a lifeline for people who struggle with addiction but still want to go out and have a dance.

We’re buzzing that @bristolsoberspaces will be joining us, you can chat to them on the night if you want to find out more about the amazing work that they do. For now, go give them some love - and grab a ticket because we’re over halfway to sell out!
