Daft Punk — 'Discovery' (2001)

1. MIXED ON A TOY — Homework and Discovery were both mixed on the JVC boombox Thomas Bangalter got for his 11th birthday. Two platinum albums through a kids' stereo.

2. BARRY MANILOW'S GUITAR — The riff driving 'Superheroes' is lifted from Manilow's 'Who's Been Sleeping in My Bed' — one of only four cleared samples on the entire record.

3. THE 70-SAMPLE ZIP DISK — 'Face to Face' with Todd Edwards was assembled in a single day from around 70 samples, burned to a zip disk on an AKAI S6000.

4. THE VIDEOS ARE ONE FILM — The 'Discovery' videos aren't standalone clips. Together they form Interstella 5555, a full-length anime made with Leiji Matsumoto and Toei Animation.

@charlottedewittemusic keeps dropping a disco record in the middle of her huge techno sets, and it goes off every single time.

Now she has put it out on her own label. @oliverheldens and @djwillclarke linked up to rework “Lost In Music,” the Sister Sledge classic written by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards, and it just landed on Époque, the label Charlotte runs for reimagined dancefloor classics. @kntxtmusic

Techno drive up front, disco soul underneath. That is the whole record, and it is streaming everywhere now.

Sammy Virji’s high-energy UKG sound has always had a huge disco house influence running through it.

Case in point: there is an unreleased ID doing the rounds in his sets right now that leans all the way in. Strings up, hands up, pure disco energy at garage speed. He keeps teasing it and it keeps going off.

We Rave You just rounded up the unreleased IDs Sammy has been dropping, and out of the whole stack, this is the one with the most disco in it. It needs a release date ASAP.

Apple just soundtracked its new product launch with a disco house record.

Today Apple announced HomeView, its new smart home hub. $299, out November 13. The official launch film is scored by ‘Collect 200’, the self-titled record from Collect 200. Apple’s own video description credits it.

Collect 200 are Stevie Appleton and Nick Henriques, a duo split between LA and Toronto who met at Miami Music Week. They make feel-good records the human way: live guitar and keys, vintage synths, a 1968 Hofner bass, dusty drums with swing, nothing quantized to death. Nearly 50 million streams in, with a debut album ‘Everything Will Be Alright’ and records like ‘Dream’, ‘Goodbye’, ‘Mixed Emotions’ and ‘Notorious’.

And this is what Apple does. In 2018 Spike Jonze built the HomePod film ‘Welcome Home’ around Anderson .Paak’s ‘Til It’s Over’. Vulfpeck’s ‘Back Pocket’ became an entire Apple Pay ad. Today’s launch event was even called ‘Welcome Home’.
