The Quarry at Grant Park combines a playground, walking paths, and overlooks of an old quarry.

The playground is the main attraction for families, but what really sets it apart is the old quarry just beyond it. A pier extends over the quarry, giving you a great view of the deep blue water, with several overlooks and paved walking paths nearby.

If you’re looking for a new park to check out with the kids—or just want somewhere different for a walk—it’s worth adding to your list.

A hidden waterfall just 20 minutes from downtown Winston-Salem ✨

Shore-Styers Mill Park is one of those places that’s easy to miss unless you know it’s there. Just pull into the small parking area, take the short walk down, and you’ll find a beautiful little waterfall with no hike required.

It’s also a popular swimming hole during the summer, with shallow areas to splash around and deeper water for swimming.

A few things to know before you go 👇

✨ No hiking required—it’s only about a minute from the parking area.

✨ Water shoes are a good idea. The rocks in and around the creek can be pretty slippery.

✨ The falls are usually most impressive after a good rain.

✨ Please help keep this spot clean by packing out anything you bring.

Beaufort is the kind of place where you never really know what you might run into.

Walk the shoreline, explore the nearby islands, or spend some time along the water and there’s always a chance you’ll spot something unexpected.

This small coastal town has been part of North Carolina’s Crystal Coast for more than 300 years, and the surrounding marshes, barrier islands, and waterways are still full of life.

It’s one of those places where the best moments tend to happen when you’re not looking for them.

Have you ever visited Beaufort?

One of the best hikes in the Piedmont. 🏔️

Hanging Rock Trail is a 3.6 mile moderate hike located in Hanging Rock State Park near Danbury, NC — and the views from the summit are hard to beat anywhere in this part of the state.

The park sits in the Sauratown Mountains, a range often called “the mountains away from the mountains” because they rise so dramatically from the surrounding Piedmont. Hanging Rock itself is a quartzite outcrop that juts out above the treeline, giving you a 360° view that feels bigger than you’d expect for central NC.

The trail gains about 400 feet of elevation on the way up — enough to feel earned, not enough to be brutal. It’s a great entry point if you’re newer to hiking, and still a satisfying climb if you’re not.

What makes it easy to overlook is how accessible it actually is. If you live in the Piedmont, you can leave in the morning, summit, and be back home before noon — it has the energy of a casual trip to the park, except you end up on top of a mountain with views that stretch for miles.

Have you done this classic?

Spring is on the horizon, but winter isn’t done just yet. As more snow falls in parts of NC, it’s worth looking back at the views this season gave us.
