Consider this a love letter to Charlotte coffee.

Not just what’s being brewed, but the people, history and communities that have gathered around it.

This story traces that evolution from integration at the Coffee Cup to the new ways Charlotte’s coffeehouses are bringing people together today.

It also marks a return to journalism after years away from writing, inspired by the places I kept finding myself in while building NightOwl.

The Hamptons just landed in South End.

Flora has opened at Atherton Mill, its first location outside Westhampton Beach.

This location doesn’t stray far from its botanical namesake. Plants hang overhead, greenery runs through the walls and details, and the bar sits right in the middle of everything. It feels lush without going over the top.

For dinner we had the sweet basil chicken and wild mushroom risotto before getting the Flower Pot, Flora’s signature dessert. It layers French vanilla ice cream, Tate’s cookies, caramel and Nutella mousse under Oreo “soil” and serves the whole thing in a flower pot.

The atmosphere is the draw here but the menu concepts are creative enough to provide appeal once you settle in.

Charlotte waited six years for this.

After the pandemic canceled the Slow Rush Tour in 2020, Charlotte watched as nearby cities like Asheville and Wilmington got multiple Tame Impala shows while the city continued to wait.

Last weekend, @tameimpala finally made his Charlotte debut alongside @djotime, filling Spectrum Center for two sold-out nights.

We got the chance to experience the show from two different perspectives. Here are a few of our favorite moments from both nights.

The Panthers lost the game. HopFly won the day.

Before Carolina and Chicago kicked off, @hopflybrewingco had the patio full of artists, vendors, and a soundtrack from @mentcitymusic.

Our first stop was the @cattywagon from @lockerroomclt. Basically a Panthers nostalgia trip on wheels, packed with the kind of throwback gear you’d normally have to spend all day thrifting to find.

If you showed up without your team colors, they had you covered.

The easiest way to commit to the bit: Panthers blue on your face.

@secondstar.facepaint was giving out free Panthers-themed face paint and we had to take advantage.

The design was great, and somehow it didn’t wear off even after a scorcher of a day.

NightOwl is building a network of the local creators who give CLT its character. Be sure to follow and support them.

Last but not least, friend of the program @mentcitymusic.

Will had a great set that could be enjoyed by all ages. His energy and passion for DJing are apparent whenever you speak to him.

Room service with a view.

BarFly has officially landed at Camp North End.

We stopped by @roomserviceclt for lunch before heading upstairs for a first look at their new sister concept, @barflyclt.

The warm retro hospitality energy so prevalent downstairs is just as apparent at BarFly.

A leopard-print pool table, disco ball and skyline views set the scene for a relaxing afternoon or an event-filled evening.

NIGHTOWL × CHNO

We’ve spent a lot of time at @chnocoffee.co lately, and increasingly, not just for coffee.

Their new LoSo space has been hosting night markets, movie nights and local collaborations that give people a reason to stick around well into the evening.

So we stopped by and checked in with NightOwl. The app recognizes your location when you check in, allowing you to share where you are with friends and connect with people who share your interests.

Building something alone forces you to get creative.

I’m building NightOwl largely as a one-man team, and AI has given me the freedom to explore ideas, build things and create at a scale I otherwise couldn’t.

But using it has also made something pretty clear: real photographers and designers are becoming more valuable, not less.

AI can make compelling imagery, but it still has to guess. At scale, the mistakes become obvious. Details mutate. Places lose their authenticity. Something can look polished and still not feel real.

Human photography and design have an eye and a raw quality that are incredibly hard to reproduce.

That’s part of why I’m building a creator network into NightOwl, bringing more of the people actually documenting and shaping our cities into the platform.
