It's Way Back Wednesday! Early Stillwater Businesses

Pictured here are P.N. Peterson's St. Croix Marbleworks (left) and H.L. Foster's Machinery (right), which stood at 245 and 241 N. Main St. (east side of Main between Mulberry and Commercial streets, approximately where the River Market Community Co-op stands).

The Marbleworks was owned by Peter N. Peterson, who was born in 1855 in Hjerndrup, Denmark (then a part of the Prussian or German Empire). Peter immigrated with his parents to the U.S. in the late 1870s and by 1880 was living in Stillwater and employed as a marble cutter. Over the next 20 years, he would craft tombstones and monuments for many of the town's most prominent citizens. Peterson also had a branch in St. Paul. In the early 1900s, he left Stillwater for St. Paul, where he died on March 3, 1917, leaving behind a wife and five daughters.

H.L. Foster was Hiram L. Foster, a native of Brighton, New York, and a Civil War veteran who came to Stillwater in the late 1870s. Hiram enlisted in the Union Army in February 1862 and received an honorable discharge after losing his leg on the battlefield at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863. After settling in Stillwater with his wife Martha and three children, Fred, Eva, and Ellen, the family lived at 1114 N 4th Street. H.L. Foster's also had locations in St. Paul and Richmond, Virginia; the Stillwater location, also known as "H.L. Foster & Sons," was later managed by his son, Fred. Hiram Foster died in Richmond on February 1, 1896, at age 55.

This photograph of both businesses, believed to be from the late 1880s, is also remarkable because it was taken by John Kuhn, the most prominent of local photographers in Stillwater during the 1880s and 1890s. Kuhn's photography studio was at 109 S. Main St. This photo and others in the collection may be viewed anytime the library is open in the St. Croix Collection.

The Minnesota Territorial Prison held some of the state's most notorious criminals.
But one of its most heartbreaking stories wasn't about an inmate at all.
