Last call for Luciano + Pascual (ā€˜L+P’ as our team affectionately calls this coffee), a two-farm microlot blend from Huehuetenango, Guatemala.

Produced under organic certified principles by Luciano Rafael Gomez and Pascual Marcos Cardona, members of the ADIPY co-operative, their microlot coffee came to us via @atlas_coffee and reflects years of community-led investments in agronomy training and quality improvement.

Sweet, berry-like, and creamy, we taste milk chocolate covered blackberries in the cup. This dynamic coffee is delicious black and paired with milk. Shop online (Link in bio) or stop by our St-Laurent Store to grab a bag before it’s gone. ā˜•ļøā

Pictured here is Paulino Gutiérrez, one of seven farmers contributing to Taypiplaya—the name of our first Bolivian coffee.

Taypiplaya is one of the larger communities in Caranavi, Bolivia’s main coffee-producing province, home to just over 2,000 residents. Bolivia accounts for less than 0.01% of global coffee exports, making it a rare ā€œmicro-originā€ despite having the climate and geography for exceptional terroir. Much of its coffee is grown in the remote Yungas mountain region, where steep terrain, limited roads, and distance from export hubs make production highly fragmented and logistics-heavy—shaped as much by community coordination as by farming itself.

We’re grateful to @apexcoffeeimports and family-owned Agricafé exporters in Bolivia for helping make traceable, and high quality community-lots like this more accessible.

This coffee was fermented in steel tanks before final seed extraction, creating an amplified sweetness and rounded texture in the cup. We taste brown sugar, hazelnut, and fresh apricot.

You may have noticed we never use the moniker ā€œdirect trade.ā€

To us, it’s an oversimplification—one that quietly erases the complex, coordinated work required to bring traceable coffees to menus like ours. Coffee is never actually ā€œdirect.ā€ It’s always a network: informal producer groups, cooperatives, washing stations, mills, exporters, non-profit organizations, importers, quality control teams, and long-term financial partners like microfinance institutions or importers.

We don’t yet have a catchy moniker for our approach to buying, instead we try to tell stories about the relationships and people behind our beans as accurately as possible. Here is more about how Isabela Marcos Gaspar’s coffee from Conceptión Huista, Guatemala came to our menu:

Featured for 8 years on our menu, this year we purchased her entire microlot harvest: 1242 kg, translating to roughly 4000 retail bags.

Isabela’s coffee reaches us through our long-standing relationship with importers @atlas_coffee , who in turn have decades of work with @codechcafe — the parent organization of ADIPY, the cooperative Isabela joined in the 1990s. Together with CODECH’s network of producer groups, dry milling and exporting services and technical support, training, and a quality competition, they help bring exceptional, remote, fully traceable microlots to market and connect producers like Isabela with roasters around the world.

Isabela began planting coffee trees in 1990 on her one-hectare farm where she also grows produce to sell. By 2004, her farming practices were already organic, and in 2009 she formalized that work through organic certification and Fair Trade certification after joining ADIPY.

When we began roasting over 13 years ago, Ethiopian coffees were not on our menu—not for lack of admiration, but because traceability and relationship-driven buying was rarely achievable.

Coffee moved through a centralized auction system that often dissolved farmer identity and blurred payment accountability beyond the exporter or washing station. Reforms to the Ethiopian Coffee Exchange in 2017/2018 reshaped what was possible for traceable trade, as did the dedication to building alternate trade models by community and impact driven washing station owners, exporters and importers, like those behind Green Spring, our latest Ethiopian release.

We purchased this coffee through @ositocoffee who partner with exporter Mike Mamo of Addis Exporting—a vertically integrated partnership that deepens transparency from farm to export and brings us closer than ever to the the people behind each lot.

According to Osito, Mike and his close collaborator Ture have become known for producing some of the most expressive washed and natural coffees in the region. Green Spring stopped us in our tracks: a natural lot of remarkable sweetness, clarity, and layered structure, grown by ~34 landholders surrounding Mike and Ture’s drying station.

We learned most of the coffee produced in the region comes from 1970s-era regional hybrids of heirloom rainforest varieties, which provides for the unmistakable Guji terroir in the cup — stone fruit, florals, and vivid syrupy sweetness.

—-> Green Spring remains on our menu for a little while longer. We recommend brewing with paper filter, though this coffee is surprisingly balanced and sweet on espresso!
