"[L]et’s get political, let’s fight for our communities, let’s make the world a fairer, livelier place," writes Jacinto Lucas Pires in a recent post on his Substack, "Pardon My English." Jacinto Lucas Pires has been a Portuguese guest with the DISQUIET International Literary Program for many years, and we highly recommend subscribing to his newsletter for more thoughts on politics, literature, art and the occasional football match.

Scholarship and fellowship applications are open for the 2027 DISQUIET International Literary Program!

Emerging Writer Scholarships:

Emerging writers can win publication and a full tuition waiver to attend DISQUIET in 2027 by entering the DISQUIET Literary Prize! This year's contest is for writing in fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, by a writer who has not yet published more than one full-length book with a major publisher. (Entrants who have published short pieces, chapbooks, one book, or no books are all welcome, as are self-published authors and those who have no prior publications). The first prize winners in each genre will be published -- the nonfiction winner in Ninthletter.com, the poetry winner in The Common, and the fiction winner in Electric Lit.

One grand prize winner will receive a full scholarship including tuition, lodging, and a $1,000 travel stipend to attend DISQUIET in Lisbon (June 27-July 9 2027). Genre winners will receive a tuition waiver in addition to publication.

Winners who are unable to attend the program may elect to receive a $1000 cash prize in lieu of the tuition waiver.

Apply now until January 4, 2027: http://disquietinternational.org/the-program/contests-scholarships/the-disquiet-prize/.

Luso/a-American Fellowships:

Four full fellowships are available for North American writers of Luso descent to attend DISQUIET. Entrants must be 18 or older by the month in which the program starts (June 2027), and residents of the United States or Canada who have a genealogical link to any Lusophone country. Please email us at info@disquietinternational.org if you have questions about your eligibility.

Winners will receive airfare stipend, accommodations, and full tuition to attend DISQUIET in Lisbon, and a place in our multi-genre workshop “Writing the Luso Experience." Runners-up will be offered partial tuition scholarships.

Apply now until January 4, 2027: https://disquietinternational.submittable.com/submit.
