💔 **I WALKED THE RED CARPET WITH A CANE — AND REFUSED TO HIDE WHAT MY BODY NEEDED.**

Selma Blair stepped onto the Vanity Fair Oscars red carpet in a stunning gown, cape, and a jeweled cane.

But behind the glamour was an aggressive form of **multiple sclerosis (MS)** that had already affected her ability to walk, her voice, her vision, and her control over her movements.

She had spent years dealing with unexplained symptoms before finally receiving her MS diagnosis.

Then came the moment millions of people saw:

A Hollywood red carpet.
A couture gown.
A camera-ready smile.
And a cane she didn’t hide.

Her cane wasn’t something she needed to conceal.

It became part of how she showed up.

Selma’s condition is **multiple sclerosis, not fibromyalgia**.

But her story speaks directly to something many people with fibromyalgia understand:

**People notice the appearance. They don’t always understand the struggle behind it.**

You can dress up while you’re hurting.
You can smile while you’re exhausted.
You can walk into a room while using every ounce of energy you have.

And sometimes, the hardest part isn’t using the mobility aid.

It’s feeling like the world expects you to hide it.

💜 **A cane doesn’t make you less capable. A visible symptom doesn’t make your illness more real. And needing help doesn’t make you weak.**

Selma’s public appearance helped challenge the idea that disability has to be hidden behind the glamour.

And for anyone living with an invisible or chronic illness, there’s another powerful reminder here:

🌿 **You don’t owe the world a version of yourself that looks “healthy” just to make other people comfortable.**

Your body has needs.

Your pain is real.

Your limitations are real.

And you are still allowed to show up beautifully.

Such fun emceeing/moderating the 3rd Annual Houston Women’s Health Landscape Sunmit hosted by the The Women’s Fund for Health Education and Resiliency at IM Houston we learned so much about the nonprofit landscape in Houston, learned about changes in policy and how they affect service programs in our community, and learned how to better advocate for change in Austin. And what a special treat for me to get to work alongside Melanie Lawson again! . #womenshealth #healthy families Ginagaston

MSINÂŽ stands for the Multiple Sclerosis
Implementation NetworkÂŽ.

Led by the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America
(MSAA), MSIN brings together people living with MS,

healthcare providers, researchers, and partners to better understand MS care in the real world.
Q
By learning from real experiences, we can better understand what’s working, what isn’t, and where

there are opportunities to improve MS care.
Over the next few months, we’ll be sharing

information about MSIN including what we’re learning, and introducing some of the people behind the work.

mssociety The reality of MS numbness goes far beyond “not feeling.”
It’s having to give up a beloved hobby, struggling to hold on to your keys, not noticing a cut until you see blood or feeling disconnected from your own body.
It’s not always visible or consistent, which can make it difficult to explain and frustrating to manage.
If you’re navigating life in a body that doesn’t always cooperate, you’re not alone. At least half of people living with MS will experience numbness at some point. Hear firsthand from people navigating MS numbness in their daily lives and learn from experts about managing symptoms, knowing when it’s time to seek care and finding ways to keep doing the things you love at the link in bio. taken in San Antonio, Texas by @disruptmsconcierge
