Here we are! The 25 releases of the year that had the biggest impact on me. While it wasn’t a crazy one for big-name releases, I had even more fun than usual sniffing out and discovering a whole bunch of new (and new to me) artists.

One of the biggest sources for this was the YouTube channel Rites of Pestilence. They’ve become an absolute wellspring for sharing (predominantly black metal) videos of albums that are usually unable to be heard elsewhere. One such album is Viha—Endless Beginning of the Infinite End. Given a bit more time, it would’ve undoubtedly found its way even higher up the list. I wholeheartedly recommend subscribing to them and taking the plunge in listening to anything and everything they share.

As you may have noticed, there isn’t a lot of death metal featured here. I think this is in part due to me leaning far more into BM these days and also needing something a little extra/different in my DM to fully appreciate and get on board with it. The one exception to this was the debut album by Ancient Death. A fairly traditional DM release by the usual standards, but one that brought a tonne of soul and personality and was just a real pleasure to listen to.

The return of the black/death metal kings. Teitanblood has always been as intense as it gets when it comes to this form of music, and that is no different on FtVA. While it maybe doesn’t quite reach the heights of their first two full lengths (an extremely high bar to reach for sure), it still packs a tonne of punch and weight, especially in the drum department.

Most importantly for me is the feeling one gets from a Teitanblood record, and that is here in spades. Everything from start to finish is practically drenched in the blackest of black atmospheres that no other band can quite tap into. A glorious thing indeed.

Hebephrenique’s debut full length release brings a wealth of confidence of a band that’s been around for far longer than they have. This is especially evident in the songwriting department, where they ebb and flow through various forms of dissonance without ever feeling disjointed. Backed up by one hell of an eerie, yet surprisingly lush atmosphere, Decathexis has set the band up for a promising and bright future.

Add them to the list of solid bands coming out of ever growing hotbed that is the Brisbane extreme metal scene 🔥🙌 by @dissonant_ways

One of the most underrated bands in modern bm. Mortuus has become an absolute master in writing a mid-paced maelstrom of a tune.

Although the band adopts a quality-over-quantity approach when it comes to their output (Diablerie being only the third album they’ve released since forming in 2003), you know you’re going to get nothing but real and sincere music. Including one of the most deliciously pitch-black drenched atmospheres you’ll come across in the entire genre.

Bm isn’t just music; it’s a feeling. And Mortuus has it in spades. by @dissonant_ways

Chronicles of Lunacy further solidifies Defeated Sanity’s position at the head of the table when it comes to all things bdm. One of the band’s greatest qualities has always been their overall songwriting chops; this is especially apparent here. Everything is still orchestrated with an insane amount of technical ability and neck-snapping intensity, making for a truly addictive listen.

Lille being able to focus solely on drumming this time around has seemingly made room for little flurries of experimentation. Incorporating even more jazzy fills than usual amongst the blasts. Perhaps lending his skills once again to the latest IO album influenced this. Whatever the reason, I’m here for it. He has to be right up there among my favorite extreme metal drummers alongside the likes of JSM of Ulcerate.

What is truly apparent is that Colin Marston NEEDS to be on board with production/mastering, etc., as he has them sounding the best they ever have. This shouldn’t really be a surprise, however, as the man truly knows his stuff.

Bdm definitely isn’t my go-to genre these days, but when it’s done to this quality and standard, it’s really hard not to love.
