One of the most surreal moments of my life! 🍿 @carla_barla_garla has written such a meaningful book with essays about dealing with grief and hardship and change, about navigating uncertainty, about honoring our cravings, and with recipes for all the different kinds of moments in our lives. It talks about divorce and life and all the messy parts of our lives, and is very, unapologetically real. Thank you to Carla and @boldforkbooks for helping organize this popcorn movie night of Heartburn and asking me to be part of it! Thought running for office was hard, but Acatenago said “toma mi cerveza.” 😤 This weekend, I hiked dormant volcano Acatenago, and while the weather was rough at first (see last slide), we got to see some pretty spectacular eruptions from Fuego. And the next morning, we did a sunrise hike to the summit of Acatenago, standing on the crater. It was grueling, but I did it!! And last weekend, I visited Lake Atitlan, a lake formed in the midst of three different volcanoes, in the crater of the collapse of a former super volcano. There, I learned more about Mayan textiles, chocolate making, and Maya-Christian syncretism. How extemely to be able to explore different parts of the world like this. by @districtdelicious

Councilmember Charles Allen is introducing an emergency bill today, but streateries across DC have already started coming down. At a time when restaurants and small businesses are losing money, DDOT’s new rules for permanent structures drastically raise costs on small businesses and threaten to prioritize parking spots over the places that make our neighborhoods vibrant. ——- El Concejal Charles Allen propone hoy un proyecto de ley de emergencia, pero las mesas al aire libre ya se están cerrando. What a great spooky season! 🐼🎃👻 Halloween is probably my favorite holidays and I was glad that, despite the onslaught of authoritarianism, kids were able to celebrate. Tonight, I joined neighbors in Mount Pleasant to hand out candy and watch the costume parade! Last night we also stopped by the Ward 1 Mutual Aid fundraiser at Lyman’s! Times like these expose how precarious so many of us are. Community care is important right now, and we need our government to step up and fund vital programs, raise wages, and bring down the cost of living so that we don’t need to rely on each other to fill in the gaps. And earlier this week, I went to Dupont Circle’s Annual High Heel race! Right now queer people across the country are under attack from right wing forces trying to stifle our joy and take away our rights, simply for being who we are. The high heel race was a space to reclaim that joy with one of my favorite DC traditions. ———— Qué temporada de Halloween tan genial! 🐼🎃👻 Halloween es probablemente mi festividad favorita y me alegró que, a pesar del auge del autoritarismo, los niños pudieran celebrarlo. ¡Esta noche, me uní a mis vecinos en Mount Pleasant para repartir dulces y ver el desfile de disfraces! Anoche también pasamos por la recaudación de fondos de Ayuda Mutua del la Zona 1 en Lyman’s. Momentos como estos ponen de manifiesto la precariedad en la que nos encontramos muchos. El apoyo comunitario es fundamental ahora mismo, y necesitamos que nuestro gobierno tome cartas en el asunto y financie programas sociales importantes, aumente los salarios y reduzca el costo de vida para que no tengamos que depender unos de otros para cubrir nuestras necesidades. Y a principios de esta semana, ¡fui a la carrera anual de tacones altos de Dupont Circle! En estos momentos, las personas LGBTQ+ de todo el país están siendo atacadas por fuerzas de derecha que intentan reprimir nuestra alegría y arrebatarnos nuestros derechos, simplemente por ser quienes somos. DC’s been going through it these past couple months thanks to Trump and ICE terrorizing our city. In these first couple months of my campaign (@aparnafordc), I’ve been able to stop into a lot of local small businesses (especially ward 1 businesses). Our local economy has taken a huge hit with federal layoffs, lower tourism, and now the occupation.
