She had loved that couch for years and never let herself buy it. Ralph Lauren, purple velvet, deeply tufted, and far more than she was going to spend on a sofa.

Then it turned up at an estate sale, and the matter was settled before she finished crossing the room.

For weeks it was the only thing in the room. She sat on it every day while she decided what else was worthy of being near it.

The bar cart came next. Then the art. Then the animal print rugs, chairs upholstered to match a hotel on Lake Como, and eventually a neon sign that named the place. By then nobody was pretending this was an ordinary sitting room.

She has since rebuilt the entire room in a different house. Same vibe. Same couch. Still the Diva Den.

They are called snaps. The Baroness’s are chewy. Her boys made that decision years ago and she has not revisited it.

Every angle holds up. That is always the Baroness’s requirement.

Midnight silk chocolate, powdered and cracked, rich enough that people assume the recipe is complicated. It is not. Just Hershey’s cocoa and a refusal to send out anything that photographs badly.

According to the Baroness, leopard print is a neutral. Much like this cookie, it makes everything better.

She perfected hers for Passover and knew they would end up on the menu. A cookie that special should not be relegated to a single week in springtime.

A sukkah is temporary. That is not an excuse for your table to look it.

Hers was always linen. China. Crystal. Sterling candlesticks lit properly, not tea lights in a jar. Photographs of the boys as children, blown up and hanging amidst the twinkle lights and autumn foliage. It was a wooden structure in the yard with a roof made of branches, but she ran it like her dining room. Elegant. Properly decorated to within an inch of its life.

Platters that hold their composure outdoors. Bougie Boxes that arrive wrapped, ribboned, and finished, because a hostess gift should not require you to do anything but hand it over. Cookies with names your guests will repeat at the table and text about the next morning.

The structure is temporary. The standard never wavers.

Sukkot orders close Sunday. Only a few platters left.

Three glasses. Three cookies. Three very different people.

The Baroness takes hers in the Baccarat rocks glass. Xander reaches for the Orrefors flute, which is either elegant or contrarian depending on his mood that particular day. Cooper takes whatever is tallest and whichever cookie is the most loaded.

Both boys have been caught drinking straight from the carton and yelled at for it, repeatedly, across two decades. For the Baroness, glassware is not a suggestion.

They are gentlemen now, so the argument has largely retired. Or they have simply gotten better at hiding it.

Choose your glass. Choose your cookie. She vetted every piece in this house, so whatever you select is preapproved.

Rosh Hashanah, then the break fast, then Sukkot. Somebody is hosting all of it, and it is probably you.

Apples and honey are the easy part. What follows is weeks of people at your table who will need something sweet at the end of every single meal.

Almond, peanut butter, ginger snaps, oatmeal cranberry, biscotti. Options that travel well and never need a plate.
