It’s a wrap for the first Canberra Queer Film Festival - CQFF! Last week, we had an amazing 2 days of the first Canberra Queer Film Festival together at Kambri Cinema. Across 5 free screenings and over 550 tickets booked, we welcomed over 300 attendees to this celebration of “Our Stories, Our Love” - 17 colourful and diverse stories written by and for the LGBTIQA+ community from 13 countries around the world. Our team at CQFF want to express our sincere thanks to all the wonderful attendees who showed up and enjoyed the films with us. We hope the lineup has allowed you to see your own reflections, feel your hearts resonating with not only happiness, love and empathy, but also with grief, pain and unfulfilled dreams of others. We hope to see you again in the future. Together, let’s continue to strengthen our community and amplify our voices to fight for the greater cause of human rights. *** This special event could not have happened without financial support from the Australian Capital Territory Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs. We are more than grateful to have received the Connection Fund under the Capital of Equality Grants Program to make this happen. (caption continues) We also want to extend our deepest thanks to our international and local partners: Queer Screen @queerscreen , Hanoi International Queer Film Week - HIQFW @hiqfw , Beijing Queer Film Festival - BJQFF  @beijingqueer , FUSE Magazine @fusemagazine , ANU Queer* Department @anuqueerdept , SpringOUT @springoutcbr , Queer Food @queer.food and Canberra Digest @canberradigest for providing their collaborative support in this special event. *** We would also like to thank the incredible experts/curators, directors/writers, and film distributors who contributed their time, expertise, and resources, and allowed us to share their films with local audiences here in Canberra. They are: Benson Wu @benson_san727 and Celeste Diep @celestediep (Queer Screen), Bao-Chau Nguyen @baochaunguyen.film (Hanoi International Queer Film Week), Qihong Hu (Larry) @larrrrywho (Beijing Queer Film Festival), * Leon Quang Le @leonquangle (Song Lang), Chavo @chavophoto (BARA), Courtney Westbrook @courtneywestbrookofficia taken in Kambri at ANU by @diversityact

Cải Lương (roughly translated as “Renovated Theater”) is a form of Vietnamese modern folk opera, standing at the convergence of southern Vietnamese folk songs, classical music and modern spoken drama. Originating in Southern Viet Nam in the early 20th century, it blossomed in the 1930s as a theatre of the middle class under the French colony. Nowadays, Cải Lương is continuously adapting itself to fit younger audiences in Viet Nam and is being recognised and valued by more and more international audiences. Next Monday, come to our Opening Night to see how an emotional queer story will be tied into this traditional form of art with Song Lang. 14th September, 6:30 - 8:30 pm. Age restriction: 15+ only. — Organised by Diversity ACT with financial support from the Australian Capital Territory, Office of LGBTIQA+ Affairs. Promotion supported by FUSE Magazine. Canberra Queer Film Festival 2026 - Queerness at the Intersection (Shorts Collection) 💜 As we navigate through the complexity of life, our queer identity consistently interacts with different social changes, personal responsibilities, relationships, and emotions. 👉 These could be the discrimination we have to endure just for being who we are, or the challenging conversations we have with our parents about acceptance. 👉 These could also be the unspoken dreams and hidden desires we couldn’t share with anyone else. Or sometimes, they can just be the resilience and bravery when we fight against our “destiny.” At these intersections, how will our queer identity transform? 🌈✨ 🎬🍿 Explore with us through 7 thought-provoking stories in: 1-Two Black Boys in Paradise by @bazsells 2-Stallion and a Crystal Ball by @christianredrum 3-Bull’s Heart by @margaeeditor 4-Alex in the Fields by @mariezrenner 5-DAMP by @etsen_chen 6-Lin’s Laundromat by @karlypnicholas and @hannahfeneley 7-Scarlet Reverie by Fang Zhou 🚨 Queerness at the Intersection (Shorts Collection) will be screened on 14th September, 3:30 - 5:30pm.
