a little collection of treasures. simple and delicate pieces of time. I sent these all off to print with a 1/4โ€ margin. they will all be titled by the day, time and place. All of which are here in the USA. We lose so much when we trade old, historic architecture for shopping malls. France really proved that to me. The Basque Country of France is a unique and beautiful place. Saint-Peฬe-sur-Nivelle, located in the French Basque Country, has historically been part of a region that served as a safe haven for Spanish militants and Basque political refugees, particularly during periods of tension between France and Spain. The area has often navigated complex dynamics regarding asylum seekers and political exile. The stone bridge was apart of an old road/trail that led to a meeting place for those political refugees. Secret meetings and organizing. Struggle, stress and strife. There is something about walking the same path, as the sun was setting, seeing the pastoral villages that begged me to remember the seeds of past suffering and strength. The Basque people, an indigenous group in the Pyrenees, have a long history of resisting cultural erasure, political oppression, and foreign rule (Romans, Franks, Spain) to maintain their unique language, Euskara, and cultural identity. Basque people have a unique genetic profile, often described as a "genetic island" in Europe, with ancestry stemming primarily from early Neolithic farmers who mixed with local hunter-gatherers, rather than from later migration waves, maintaining distinctiveness from neighboring Spanish and French populations due to long-term relative isolation. The Basque conflict refers primarily to the 1959โ€“2011 campaign by the separatist group ETA for independence from Spain and France, resulting in over 800 deaths. It stemmed from Gen. Franco's suppression of Basque identity after the 1936-39 Spanish Civil War. Pablo Picassoโ€™s Guernica (1937) is an anti-war painting depicting the horrors of the German bombing of a Basque town during the Spanish Civil War. It serves as a universal, monochromatic indictment of fascism, violence against civilians, and the suffering of war.
