Painting Title: “Wellness Realm”
Completed: Dec, 2020
Dimensions: 24“ X 24“
Medium: Gouache, natural/stone pigments and inks on handmade wasli

Wellness can be spiritual, emotional, relational, individual, physical and ecological. When all the aspects of wellness are harmoniously integrated, the world and those within it flourish. To embody this notion into my painting, I anchored on the central idea of the ‘Kalpavruksha’, which in Vedic mythology is the world tree. The sacred tree is an important archetype in many of the world's mythic, religious, and philosophical traditions; in some traditions it is the tree at the center of the cosmos, in some it connects the underworld to the heavens, and in others it is the source of creation, wisdom, immortality and the granting of wishes. With all of this in mind, I use botanical inspiration from Indian miniature paintings, filled with elements that sustain life – the moon, the stars, divine fruit (i.e. pomegrantes and mangoes), a river, brimming with vibrant colours and pattern. From the central idea, to the selection of symbolic elements and the colour palette, I’ve attempted to create this realm of wellness, by study, effort, labour and love.

Meet featured RADARTist @divya_pamnani_✨

RAD: How do you balance making work for yourself vs thinking about collectors and the market?

Divya:
I paint what brings me joy and create art I want to live with. This simple premise guides my subject and colour palette. There are times when I fall short; it’s almost always because I strayed from my instincts. Yet, those moments offer a vital lesson: they teach me to close the gap between vision and execution. Inspiration is a beautiful, precious guide, and narrowing that chasm is exactly the purpose of my practice.

⸻

ABOUT DIVYA:

Divya Pamnani (b. 1983) is a Bombay-based artist whose contemporary practice builds upon the legacy of Indian miniature painting. Her visual storytelling brings together traditional Indian art forms with a love for playful, intricate pattern-making.

Her eclectic background spans Psychology at the University of Texas at Austin, a Master’s in Public Health from the University of Michigan, and work in the US non-profit sector until 2014. She transitioned to a full-time studio practice in 2020.

Her formal art education includes abstraction and drawing at the New York Academy of Art, followed by a Postgraduate Diploma in Indian Aesthetics and coursework in The Art of the Book in South Asia at Jnanapravaha, Bombay.

She also trained under Master Artist Mahaveer Swami of the Bikaner School in Rajasthan, learning traditional studio practices including the preparation of raw pigments and painting surfaces. This technical training became foundational to her distinctive visual vocabulary.

Today, Divya continues to develop a contemporary language rooted in Indian miniature traditions, shaped by colour, pattern, thematic depth, and her experiences as a professional scuba diver.

Title: Blush Meredians
Dimensions: 16” x 20”
Medium: Gouache, stone pigments, and ink on wasli

Now that the piece is more or less complete on my desk, I am stepping into that familiar period of quiet observation—looking at the work to see what might still need to shift. Right now, I feel a slight uncertainty regarding the striped chhatra/parasol - often seen in pahari miniatures. I am debating whether to leave it as it is or resolve it into a solid color to ground the composition. Overall, though, I feel a deep sense of satisfaction with the color harmony achieved between the flowers and the clouds. by @divya_pamnani_

In life, trying to create my own kind of music.

Getting back to why I’m posting, remember a few weeks ago I asked friends on the gram for someone to come by my studio and take some shots of me - a media platform asked me for some and I wanted new stuff.

Through that ask, I found the lovely @pranidhi.khoj who came by and helped me get comfortable in front of the camera - some turned out pretty cool - and she’s awesome to work with - so give her a shout if you need some headshots and what not. Also check out @doorbeencreatives

Thanks @oorjamoon for connecting us. Awesome connections are awesome 🌈❤️🙏

Yesterday, I listened to someone incredibly wise share a perspective on Guru Purnima that really stuck with me. They suggested expressing gratitude for everything in life. Not just the formal teachers we learn from, but everyone—friends, family, and even our circumstances, both the good and the uncomfortable. In all likelihood, the good far outweighs the rest. But as humans, we often feel so entitled to comfort that we fixate on the hard things instead of the blessings.I’ve always known how lucky I am with my tribe, but as I grow older, I realize it’s absolute jackpot-level luck. This is mostly a shoutout to the first woman in my series. She’s the real Queen, and I make sure she hears that from me daily for helping me navigate this beautifully weird journey called life. ✨👑 by @divya_pamnani_

After sitting on my desk for months, this piece is finally complete! 🎨 That true "painter’s high" kicked in right at the end, making all the creative struggles feel like water under the bridge (literally!). It wasn't all easy, but once I pushed past the self-doubt, it was smooth sailing to the finish line.As David Attenborough wisely said, "The ocean is the lifeblood of our home."

This work is a love letter to the ocean and the time I've spent diving. I wanted to capture the sheer awe of nature’s creativity—the intricate corals, the patterned fish, and the mind-blowing spectrum of colors you see underwater. I went completely super-chromatic with this palette because color simply makes me happy. 🌊✨

In my mom’s oasis

Summer experiments of colour and play, just simple matte acrylic colours I like on circular Khadi paper I bought years ago… before I move on to other things on my list of projects to complete.

Somewhere along the way - I forgot to play.

Trying to bring back play.
