The process. Physical intimacy begins with emotional intimacy. The emotional graph informs the action graph, and that process begins with building trust, exploring connection and understanding boundaries. From the gaze, the first touch, proximity and breath to the duration and pressure of every touch or movement, from consent and boundaries to modesty garments, everything is discussed, specified and choreographed with intention. Nothing is assumed. Every action is informed, communicated and consented to. From reading the script to the actor calls to chemistry-building workshops to choreography and finally performance, there are so many layers to this work before it even reaches the screen. ✨ Thank you @vyaso and @bravespacesindia for holding space for us to learn the process and understand the work so deeply. bone breath & ancient flesh A @diyanise creation. This project took place in September 2024, at the @csmvsmumbai museum For one month we were invited to enter and work post museum opening hours (6:00pm onwards) Surrounded by their then travelling exhibit of ancient Indian x Greek statues. This is a story straight out of Night At The Museum, eerie quiet and the echoes of our foot steps and bodies on the marble floors , with this beautiful architecture and museum night guards for company. The performance that was created by Diya prompted us dancers to allow our bodies to temporarily become vessels holding the myths of these ancient Gods, the Varaha…Athena… Zeus. A reflection of how we continue to live out their myths and histories and stories even in this body and modern world. They say dust to dust but probably we are just going back to water, in the breaking and washing of waves. As the waters rise, where else could we possibly be headed. We took this ocean to the river last evening. Artsforward was delighted to bring the Maitri-grant winning The Ocean Between Us, a cross-cultural interdisciplinary collaborative movement theatre piece by Indian artist Diya Naidu and Australian artist Nadia Milford to Kolkata. The work uses the metaphor of the Indian Ocean, separating the collaborators, to explore how what divides us can also connect us. Geopolitics to climate change, hard questions, harder answers through agile movement and playful text. Thank you to the Australian Consulates-General of Bangalore and Kolkata for the support. Cannot thank The Barge Company enough for their efforts in making this performance happen. Having this safe space on our beautiful river for art and performance is a gift. Thank you @theredbarikolkata and @baribakesbytheredbari for your generous and delicious helpings of bakes and tea for our guests. Thank you to the tech teams, thank you Ahana and all the beautiful dancers for the support. From the pouring evening rain, to the gentle rocking of the boat to the sounds of crashing waves, water was all-pervading last evening. We are grateful. The arts and performance remind us to ask questions and connect to wonder when life takes over and all we are doing is surviving and coping. Artsforward has had the rare privilege of curating and presenting Diya Naidu 's work over the last decade in its many provocative, intuitive and discursive iterations. We are delighted to collaborate with @thebargecompany and be supported by the Australian Consulate-General in Kolkata and Bangalore to present in Kolkata this new interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaboration that Diya Naidu and Nadia Milford have imagined and created over the last two years. The work is autobiographical, embodied and emerging from real conversations between two women across oceans working in the arts and reflecting on race, migration, ecology, grief and urgent political crises with gentleness, play and care.
