Enrolled does not mean informed.

An enrollment update is not the same as an account update.

Ask what has been resolved and what hasn't. Ask what fees apply and what money is set aside.

Keep these questions handy for your next review.

You pay into it every month. And you still couldn't explain it to a friend.

If you're in a debt program and you'd have to guess where each account stands, that's not you being careless. Programs can be hard to follow from the outside.

What I'd want answered, account by account:
• Which accounts have been resolved
• Which haven't — and what's happening on those
• How much has gone to fees, and how much is set aside
• What's supposed to happen next

This isn't a reason to panic or cancel anything. It's a reason to get informed.

"Throw every spare dollar at your debt." It sounds disciplined — and it's also the kind of plan that can break the first time a normal bad month hits: a car repair, a short paycheck, a school expense.

That's a Good-Month Plan. When it breaks, most people blame themselves instead of the plan.

A better question: does your plan survive your worst normal month? Whatever's left over on a good month is a bonus — not the plan itself. Aggressive isn't the same as durable.

None of these are terrible advice on their own. That's exactly what makes them risky.

1. "Just ask for a hardship plan." Can help — but what happens when it ends?
2. "Just consolidate." One payment is cleaner — but what actually changes about your month?
3. "Wait until you're ready." Ready isn't a feeling. It's having the information.

Which one have you been told?

"One low monthly payment." That line can describe two very different debt programs.

Debt management plan: usually through a credit counseling agency. One payment to the agency, which pays the creditors in the plan. The goal is generally to repay what you owe, and creditors may lower interest, fees or the payment.

Debt settlement: aims to resolve accounts for less than the full balance. It often involves accounts going unpaid while money builds up — with real trade-offs.

Neither is automatically right. They fit different situations. But you can't compare two options if you don't know which one you're holding.

Before you call a company, answer an ad, or pick a debt plan — grab a pen. Three columns. Two minutes.

1. Who holds each account right now (not who it started with)
2. The latest thing you got on it — don't interpret it yet, just write it down
3. What you could keep paying on a bad month.

You'll probably hit a blank. That blank is the point. It's where you start.

Your score is not your whole debt picture.

A credit score is one result. It does not tell you which account needs attention.

Look instead at the accounts themselves: their stage, and a payment you could realistically sustain.

The money landed. None of it feels like yours.

When a paycheck is gone before it lands, that’s usually not a spending problem. It’s a sign the debt is writing your budget now.

“Creditors never take less than the full balance.” I don’t agree with that. And I don’t agree with anyone who promises they always will.

“Never” and “guaranteed” are both shortcuts. Both skip the stage of the account — Stage Before Size. An account that’s current with your bank xand one that’s charged off and with a collector are different conversations.

What matters: where the account is, who holds it now, and what you could realistically offer without breaking your month.

The useful question isn’t “will they take less?” It’s “where is this account, and who am I dealing with?”

Missed a credit card payment? The call that follows usually comes down to one question: “When can you pay?”

The hard part isn’t the question. It’s the silence after it. That’s when people promise a date they haven’t tested — and a date you give under pressure may become the date they follow up on.

Have one honest sentence ready instead: “I don’t want to give you a date I can’t keep. I’m working out what I can realistically manage before I commit to a payment date.”

You’re not refusing. You’re not agreeing to something you haven’t tested. You’re keeping the next step on your timeline.

When you're juggling more than one debt, whatever called you last feels like the emergency.

Try this instead: write down what comes in, and look at all your accounts together once a week. Real deadlines and anything about court go first.

Save this if you're juggling more than one account.
