My 75th and recent article for @fortyonemag is out on their first ever print issue!

i had the pleasure of talking with @arianaraygoza @foryourviewingpleasure @goals_for_gaza about the ANTI CUP, the LA-based community led response to the controversies of FIFA and the World Cup.

For one day, players, artists, creatives, and fans came together for football, culture, and advocacy, raising over $2K for @lajeeceltic in 🇵🇸 @impaktemos in 🇻🇪 and vulnerable families in 🇮🇷. The ANTI CUP shows that maybe we never really needed corporations or institutions to create meaningful change through the beautiful game, we just needed each other.

So honored to be a part of Forty-One these past three years and to be a part of the many talented writers, photographers and contributors to bring their inaugural print issue to life. Forever grateful to @elchereik for providing a space to share the diverse, unique stories that help define soccer/football in North America. They existed long beyond this year’s World Cup and they’ll continue to exist beyond it. So please feel free to reach out to me (djacolatse@gmail.com) so they can keep being told.

98 Degrees & Rising: TSU Homecoming Through the Years

Exhibited for ‘A League of Our Own: Sport & Embodiment’, the 4th Annual Black Houston(s) Symposium, hosted at Rice University, 3/27/2026.

When I heard about the opportunity to showcase work for the symposium, my goal was to highlight the sporting communities that have defined Houston sport & culture, now & then.

After discussions with the team at Rice, and going through my archive, I decided to tell the story of one of the most iconic HBCUs through its longest running staples: homecoming.

The idea was to juxtapose the images I took at last year’s homecoming with images from homecomings of the past. As the university will hit its 100th year, I wanted to present the project as an ongoing time capsule.

Spending a day at TSU’s Library Learning Center, I got to pour over decades of yearbooks, newspaper clippings, and administrative documents detailing the evolving history of what it means to have a homecoming at Texas Southern University.

Some traditions faded over time, games were played in various Houston venues, and some changes - like last year’s curfew - have been reflective of the changing landscape in the city and beyond.

Yet, for students, faculty and alumni, Homecoming remains a source of pride and expression. You get a glimpse into the fashion and music that set the tone each game. The pageantry, the camaraderie that fills Third Ward with every parade down Emancipation Park. That hasn’t changed. But for this history to continue to grow and evolve for the next generation of Tigers, we must always look back.
