Last year, I had the opportunity to create the visual identity for “Biang Kerok: Pameran Arsip Benyamin Suaeb,” an archival exhibition initiated by Irama Nusantara. Benyamin Suaeb, a multi-disciplinary artist from Betawi, has created an artistic legacy that remains deeply relevant to society—particularly in Jakarta—even though he left the Indonesian entertainment world nearly 30 years ago. From his early days with the Melody Boys to becoming a cultural icon of gambang kromong infused with modern styles, his body of work blends sharp social critique with distinctive humor, cleverly navigating the censorship of the New Order era. “We don’t make mistakes, we just have happy little accidents.” – Bob Ross A brand new identity and direction for @moccaofficial in celebration of their “25 Years Anniversary Campaign.” Since the start of this project, I’ve received so many stories from them about their series of unfortunate “happy accidents.” Why “happy accidents”? It’s Mocca, everyone. They’re marked by their positive, lovely, story-telling, family-friendly band. They don’t make mistakes—they just have happy little accidents (thanks, Bob. I owe you one). They didn’t plan on being a band for 25 years; they just lived it. They didn’t plan on naming their band “Mocca”; they just went with it, and somehow, 25 years passed. I didn’t grow up on their songs, but my wife did. She surprisingly listened to their music since elementary school (I hate to admit it, but she has great taste), while my elementary school self was blasting “Cerita & Lagu Anak Siluman Ular Putih” (IYKYK. That howling wolf sound gave me nightmares). My first encounter with them was in 2011. I picked up their third album, Colours, because the packaging was cute, but I ended up putting it back on the shelf since I bought Rajasinga’s Rajagnaruk that day. Fast forward to today, listening intently to their songs and watching them grow old together (#MenuaBersama) gives me hope that sometimes, you don’t have to worry too much about life—just go along with it (alias sing penting dilakoni wae, ndan). My 20-year-old self would be surprised to know that jamming to their songs with my daughter would become a priceless memory—for me, at least. Hence the song title: Menua Bersama. Exciting things are still yet to come. Don’t sleep on it.
