A woman booked me to DJ a house party after seeing me play a high-end lecture series. At the lecture, I was playing very safe music. Top 40, pop, a little electro soul and house music for a room of scientific minds and philosophers. When I sent over the agreement and music planning sheet, she sent it back full of ratchet music and mostly rap. Let’s just say based on stereotypes and her demographic, I was very surprised and when I went to her house to DJ the party, she knew the lyrics to every single song. My flabbers were gasted, to say the least! Over the years, we’ve become great friends! Although I’ll admit we don’t fully share the same music taste LMAO 😹 The biggest thing people get wrong about reading a room is trying to judge an audience by what they look like, their age, or where they live. Getting ready for a gig takes me just as long as the set itself and I used to feel weird about that 💭 After 26 years of entertaining at festivals, galas, and corporate events I learned that how you show up visually sets the tone before you ever touch the decks. When an event planner books you for a luxury gala or a corporate stage, you are standing next to executives, sponsors, and people who spent thousands on their tables. They are trusting you with the energy of their entire room. Looking like you just rolled out of bed tells them you did not take their event seriously. The outfit, the lashes, the nails, the hair, all of it is intentional because when you step behind that booth you are part of the production. You are part of the brand. People notice and event planners remember. So many DJs show up to corporate rooms in a wrinkled tee and sneakers thinking the music speaks for itself. And it does, but trust is built before the first track drops. Presentation tells the client you handle your business clean on and off stage. Flying out to Phoenix, Arizona for a corporate event and I was thinking 💭 all these years of entertaining at festivals, galas, and corporate events taught me that the biggest myth about making a living as a DJ is that it begins and ends with music. There is so much more happening behind the scenes that no one considers when they tell you "wow must be nice but what is your job really?". Showing up prepared and on time, troubleshooting on the fly when something goes wrong, and communicating swiftly with the client. Then you have contracts, invoices, and riders, knowing what all those terms mean and handling your business clean. Until you reach a level where you can pay other people to handle those roles, you wear every hat. I am my own business manager, accountant, travel agent, brand strategist, MUA, hairdresser, nail tech, marketer, graphic designer, web designer, and AV technician... all of that is before digging for music, downloading tracks, mixing, and showing up to party with you. People see the set, they wish they could have the result, but they don't see how much work, time, effort, and sacrifice goes into running a creative business. It is a whole production. 26 years of entertaining at festivals, galas, and corporate events taught me that great event entertainment comes down to crowd psychology. Anybody can show up with gear and play music. But when you are running a high-stakes room, your DJ is responsible for pacing the entire night. That means reading body language across the room during dinner, shifting energy immediately after the keynote, and knowing how to get multiple generations on the floor while protecting the host’s brand.
