Most people think I've always been into music, and yes it's been my main focus throughout my life. However there was a major shift halfway through my career.Track ID: Break Out Fire (EDGER Mashup)Throughout school I played a few instruments before finally landing on my real passion of the drums at age 12. I played in the highschool jazz band and a few other projects in my 20's, but my main project I loved most was with my best friends and we were called Macula.Track ID: Macula - EugeneNo stranger to the writing and recording process, by the time I was age 24 Macula already had 3 albums recorded and we got a little radio play as well.Track ID: Macula - Ministry Of TruthIt was time to hit the road. We toured Canada a couple of times and ended up with lifelong memories but after our 5 month cross Canada tour we decided to part ways.Track ID: Macula - The 5thIt was at that point I really got more into the house and techno scene in Vancouver. I could be seen on weekends carrying my drum around festivals and into nightclubs like The Lotus, jamming along with the DJs and having the crowd and performers loving the added percussion.Track ID: EDGER - SaharaAt 27 I decided to move to Melbourne because I heard the music scene there was great. Every weekend I'd be immersed in the scene at Revs, 161 or Pawn & Co. After becoming friends with a few DJs they encouraged me to give it a try and I became addicted. Track ID: EDGER - This IllusionHundreds of gigs turned into thousands and after 6 years of honing my DJ skills I was able to pursue music as a full time career for the first time in my life. Playing 6-8 gigs per week was exhausting at times but I absolutely loved every moment along the way.After years of telling myself I was too old to learn music production and I should've started when I was younger, finally in 2019 I decided to go all in. I bought a new computer and synthesizer, and took a mixing and mastering course. The timing couldn't have been better because when covid hit I then spent 40-50 hours per week learning and improving my production skills and by the end of 2019 I'd already signed my first song.Track ID: EDGER, Jamie Vale - Hear by @djedger

Friday Q&A with a Bali Resident.This week with EDGERDJ Edger has been spinning in the better bars and clubs around town over the past year. His name seems to be popping up everywhere lately. Last Saturday night he and his partner in Brass Monkey, Sammy Sax headlined Red Ruby. We were down there and checking it out big time. Great show and definitely a new duo you will be seeing a lot more of around the traps in the future. Let’s find out more.How did you first get into electronic music? Like, was there a certain moment it all made sense?I loved the underground house and techno scene in Vancouver as soon as I discovered it back in 2005. Going to the underground clubs and summer festivals was my favourite place to be. But since I was a dedicated drummer I never thought to learn the art of DJing until I moved to Melbourne in 2012.What do you think makes electronic music so good?So many things! The repetitive nature puts you in a trance at times where time and space no longer matter. The steady kick drum inherently makes you want to move. That feeling when you hear a song for the first time and you fall in love with it right away can give you goosebumps and make your whole body and mind light up. I can’t think of any other art form that brings people together as much as electronic music and the community that loves it.How about the live music scene – not the same? What differences are there for you?With a lot of live music it’s kind of frowned upon to talk during a performance so not the best environment to meet people. Jazz performances everyone just appreciates the musicians and goes home. Hard rock shows have mosh pits sometimes, where you might get elbowed in the face which I suppose is a form of connection haha. The electronic music scene for me is really a safe place free of judgments where everyone is welcome.I loved the live music community when I was involved in it. But for the most part I’d go to a show, watch and appreciate the band, and then call it a night. But with house music gigs there’s no need to watch the DJ, and the dancefloor becomes a great place to meet like-minded people.Read the entire interview on thebeatbali.com by @djedger
