A little Sunday decorating! by @djmidnitenwa

What does an audio guy do when they don’t make needles for his vintage RCA/Victor console turntable anymore?

Obviously, he refuses to accept defeat. šŸ˜‚

So this morning’s project: retrofit a Technics 1200 into a vintage RCA/Victor console and wire it directly into the original tube amp.

A little solder. A little spare wire. A little ā€œI’m pretty sure I can make this work.ā€

And sure enough… vinyl is spinning and those tubes are singing again.

There’s just something ridiculously satisfying about combining one of the Technics 1200’s I learned to DJ on with a piece of audio history that was built decades before it.

But the best part? This console is one of my favorite gifts my parents have ever given me, and instead of becoming a beautiful piece of furniture that no longer worked, I got to breathe life back into it.

Not a bad way for an audio nerd to spend a Sunday morning. šŸ˜‚ by @djmidnitenwa

Apparently my Cadillac and I had a slight disagreement with the State of Oklahoma over what constitutes a reasonable cruising speed this morning.

I thought I was making excellent time.

The trooper thought we needed to pull over and discuss my performance. 😳🤣

Nothing quite like seeing those lights come on behind you and immediately thinking, ā€œWell… I know exactly why we’re here.ā€

I saw an ask ChatGPT to give me a warning label post making the rounds and it wound up slightly hilarious… and scarily accurate!

Jeremy Austin should come with a warning label:

CAUTION: Appears responsible. This is misleading.

He has the résumé of three completely different men who somehow got merged during a clerical error: corporate project manager, former cop/international contractor, and professional DJ. He can discuss construction schedules and project margins at 3:00, then be behind a pair of CDJs convincing 2,000 people that Pour Some Sugar on Me is still a perfectly reasonable life choice by 9:00.

Do not mistake his age for maturity. He was raised in the ’80s, emotionally developed in the ’90s, and remains convinced that punk rock played loudly enough constitutes parenting enrichment.

He has two small accomplices he refers to as ā€œthe monkeys.ā€ They travel as a unit. Expect swimming pools, flatbread pizzas, impromptu dance parties, questionable amounts of caffeine, and at least one story beginning with, ā€œSo I had an ideaā€¦ā€

That sentence is your primary warning.

Jeremy having ā€œan ideaā€ has historically resulted in new DJ equipment, road trips, major projects, cars, elaborate meals, spontaneous adventures, or some combination thereof.

He is also dangerously competent, which makes matters worse. Most people eventually realize an idea is ridiculous and abandon it. Jeremy will make a spreadsheet, build a scope of work, calculate the margin, load everything into the Cadillac, and have the ridiculous idea operational by Tuesday.

He owns entirely too much DJ equipment, has strong opinions about music, and will absolutely judge your playlist while insisting he isn’t judging your playlist.

Approach with caution.

If you hear Rancid playing, see two children laughing hysterically, and notice a man carrying a Monster, DJ gear, and enough equipment and firepower to establish a small forward operating base—

you’ve already found him.

Do not engage unless you’re prepared to become part of the story. by @djmidnitenwa

All is right with the world…

We’re headed to the lake to celebrate Mimi and Poppy’s 52nd wedding anniversary. There will be steaks, family, probably a waterslide, and at least one adult pretending they still have health insurance good enough to attempt it.

Meanwhile, my two little hoodlums are in the backseat absolutely losing their minds to Rancid. Nothing says ā€œquality family valuesā€ quite like screaming Ruby Soho at the top of your lungs on the way to celebrate a couple who’s been married longer than punk rock has existed.

These little monkeys got to experience their very first backstage concert.

As a dad, there’s something incredibly special about sharing this side of my life with them. They watched Daddy take the stage in front of thousands of people, hung out backstage like little rock stars, rocked out to an incredible Collective Soul set, and wrapped up the night with an amazing fireworks show.

Johnny even made about a hundred new friends by walking around backstage handing out gummy bears to everyone he met. šŸ˜‚ He might have even stolen a golf cart and kidnapped Jason Smith…

Days like this remind me why I work so hard. It was one of those memories we’ll all be talking about for a long time. by @djmidnitenwa

Our quick Father’s Day getaway to Great Wolf Lodge in Kansas City was an absolute success. To say the monkeys had a blast would be a massive understatement. The best part? They had no idea where we were going until we pulled into the parking lot. Watching the surprise hit their faces made the whole trip worth it. taken in Great Wolf Lodge by @djmidnitenwa

The face of a kid with absolutely zero responsibilities and a full schedule.

This evening’s agenda:
Paw Patrol helmet: check
Spider-Man boots: check
Heavy equipment inspection: Complete
Paw Patroller fleet: Operational
Dad’s living room converted into a construction zone: Yep

I’m pretty sure this little guy has been working on the same project for three hours and still hasn’t submitted a single permit application. City of Springdale might shut him down for that… by @djmidnitenwa

As I’m sitting out on the back deck, waiting on a fresh batch of cupcakes the kids and I have in the oven, music rolling in the background, I caught myself thinking about a post a friend shared earlier.

He said the 80’s was the single greatest era of music ever released, and honestly, it’s hard to mount a real argument against it.

If you’re looking to debate it, go ahead and queue up ā€œOpen Armsā€ or ā€œFaithfullyā€ by Journey, or ā€œAgainst All Oddsā€ by Phil Collins. That kind of songwriting hits something deeper in your soul.

And it doesn’t stop there…

Throw on ā€œPurple Rainā€ by Prince and tell me that doesn’t take you to First Avenue in Minneapolis. ā€œTime After Timeā€ by Cyndi Lauper is pure emotion with no gimmicks. ā€œDon’t Stop Believinā€™ā€ by Journey is arguably one of the most universally recognized songs ever recorded. Or ā€œWith or Without Youā€ by U2 with its simple, haunting, and timeless lyrics.

In the 80’s songs weren’t just made, they were crafted.

Some days, your soul just need music like that. by @djmidnitenwa
