This self-portrait is built around a self portrait I made when I was 5. Alongside it are two other versions of myself, one as a child and one today.

The self portrait I made at 5 had a speech bubble saying “Ik ben koel.” Looking back at it now, what stands out to me is how unfiltered it is. It exists without the influence of outside expectations or the need to explain itself. It’s an honest reflection of how I saw myself at that moment.

When I found the picture again a few months ago, I felt a sense of affirmation and pride. It made me smile.

I wanted that child’s voice to interrupt the painting. As a reminder that the imagination and self-belief I value today were already present long before I had the language to describe them. by @djogojogo
