My Boiler Room set has just landed @youtube 🤩 Recorded in Southall in August, I played Bhangra classics mixed with hip hop, ragga, jungle, and more, in the style that we used to at groundbreaking 90s Wag club, Bombay Jungle. Reminded me of working with early pioneers like @hustlers_convention Maximum NRG @calibarevents and the originals, Xzecutive Soundz. None of us in the 80s had a roadmap to follow, we just made history as we went along, forging and blazing a British Asian music trail that paved the way for future generations.
@san_jsanj from Xzecutive will be on the dex with me on Oct 28 when we spin some spooky tunes at my Bollywood club @kuchkuchnights and then we’ll be b2b at a mystery big gig on Nov 8th… 😜
You can also catch me back at the @britishfilminstitute @londonfilmfestival spinning my Hollywood 2 Bollywood set for @clubkali FREE afterparty Oct 13th, and then a SWANA set for NYC’s awesome @yallapartyproject London debut at @dsuperstore on Nov 10 💃🏾💃🏾💃🏾
Links in bio👆🏽

We are so lucky not to be in an horrendous conflict zone right now, and to be free to dance 🙏🏾 My heart goes out to everyone affected by these futile wars - nobody wins when innocent lives are lost. Except the arms dealers..

Thanking so many people for all love & support and welcoming new followers!

Our first screening next month is Visions from the Underground: British Asian Sonic Culture, a shorts programme curated by @julian__anando. It takes place on Friday 2nd October at the legendary @riocinema 🏩

Defining the Asian Underground has always proved a tough task. Was it a movement? A genre? A youth culture? A self-defined collective of practitioners and spaces? A nebulous web of overlapping sounds, people, experiences and outlooks? And was it always really underground?

This much we do know: throughout the 1990s, new sonic forms and club spaces emerged from, and for, South Asian people in Britain. This wave took shape, for example, in a community music workshop in Farringdon, where in 1993 the anti-racist, politically astute musical collective Asian Dub Foundation was born on screen in Smita Malde’s Identical Beat. A few years later, as witnessed in Tony Knox’s Talvin Singh: Sounds of the Asian Underground, the eponymous musician’s club night Anokha in Hoxton became a space of ephemeral cool, where young British South Asians danced alongside a diverse cohort of Londoners, as well as the likes of Afrika Bambaataa, Björk, and Iman and David Bowie. And, as documented in Pratibha Parmar’s Brimful of Asia, the offices of the short-lived-but-influential magazine 2nd Generation gave rise to forceful articulations of politics, cultures, and styles of second generation British South Asians.

Taken together, these films offer a potted history of this moment in time. We hear from the producers and progenitors of the culture and its spaces, as well as people who enjoyed these new dis-orienting rhythms. In painting this picture—which is by no means complete—we can also start to understand the Asian Underground from below, reading these films as documentary evidence of a social history that is only beginning to be told.

Followed by a discussion with @mzpratibha, @djritu and @tariq_jazeel, led by @khulrajphullar 🌟

From heatwaves & hot nights to heating on!
We roasted on the dancefloor @daytimers_uk 6th birthday! A brilliant party with beautiful people and a joy to play b2b with @rohan_rakhit ❤️
Nipped out for fresh air after our set into the smoking area. Where nobody was actually smoking 🤔 Bumped into OG comrades @soniakmehta from @salaam_and_funk Nerm and Farook from @joisoundsystem
One kept asking why he couldn’t smell weed anywhere and why the youngsters weren’t drunk?! 😂 This gen gets high on music, that’s why!
The night before I was hosting a panel at an event with my generation that got high on everything 😜 It was a nostalgic
evening at Kennington’s gorgeous @the_cinema_museum for the UK premiere of ‘Jimmy Somerville - Smalltown Boy’. A stunning documentary by @artefr that tells the story of the unique singer/songwriter @jimmysomervilleofficial who bravely challenged homophobia by being out, proud, and infinitely talented during the HIV&AIDS crisis, along with fellow artists from Bronski Beat and the Communards. Got goosebumps everytime the intro to Smalltown Boy was played and loved swapping A&R stories with London Records visionary, Colin Bell, backstage anecdotes with drummer legend June Miles Kingston, plus memories of The Bell Kings Cross with @ian_m_johns ❤️
Thank you @danglassmincer for your unwavering dedication to the community/activism and @actup_london fundraising by creating this amazing gathering, and ditto for the previous night at the Joiners Arms revival event with @ebony_rose_dark and @friendsjoinersarms 🙏🏾❤️
Looking forward to DJaying at the all new Joiners Heart in Hackney soon!

🎧But first - now that I’m back and tanned from Greece 😁 - the church bells of Islington’s @unionchapeluk beckon. Catch my global music dance set on Saturday 19th September at this historic venue and as part of the chapel’s unmissable Stories That Made Us series. This whole weekend features outstanding performers and activities!
🎧Then on September 20th I’ll be on the dex at Battersea’s Magic Garden.
See you on a dancefloor soon!

🎤Catch me on Aug 27th chatting about the return of legendary venue @friendsjoinersarms 🌈
Then Aug 28th hosting a panel @the_cinema_museum with @danglassmincer about the new film featuring @jimmysomervilleofficial and @bronskibeatofficial ❤️

Art and music mix like magic. A treasured example was at the @hornimanmuseumgardens
last week. In an event expertly curated by author & Burnt Roti magazine
founder @sharandhaliwal_ it was a joy to play sunset global tunes for divine
dancers @bolly_illusion and @thatdosacat who weaved a riot of colour through the
wildflowers of the sunken garden. Awesome art workshops too by @manju_patelnair sanjaykumar @sabah.c
Following the recent passing of Pop Art icon David Hockney, I’ve been
reflecting on the lines where these creative worlds meet. It reminded me of
our masterclass with his friend and muse, Celia Birtwell, back when I was a
student at Chelsea School of Art in 1982.
But the reason I ever made it to Chelsea at all was largely down to my
school art teacher, Mrs Taylor, who sadly passed away just a week after
Hockney at the grand age of 104. A brilliant artist, yet she dedicated her
life to nurturing thousands of us ‘young ladies’ at WCHS, enabling our
talent instead. When I hear of Giotto, Masaccio, Leonardo, or Michelangelo,
I still hear Mrs Taylor’s voice, lovingly spreading the gospel of their
artistic gifts. I can still picture her taking us to the National Gallery to
unpack the secrets of The Arnolfini Portrait.
While clearing my house over the last few months, I came across my old
portfolios and sketchbooks. Some pretty good stuff in there actually, which
I might share on here soon.. Much of my art was created to the soundtrack of
my trusty Sony Walkman.
I hope Mrs Taylor would be proud to know that on Friday, July 10th, I will
be DJing at this year’s @royalacademyarts Summer Exhibition. It’s a massive
debut for me, a total full-circle moment bridging the creative pursuits that
shaped my life—leading to a career I never could have anticipated.
Art and music mix like magic. 🎧🎨✨

July 10 – Royal Academy Summer Exhibition - chilled global tunes
July 12 – Haringey South Asian Arts Fest - Ducketts Common
