Today marks 40 days since the world lost a real life angel. People don’t know this, but on the day that my mom passed, I was scheduled to play an event.. and crazy as it may sound, I played it.

This isn’t something I was sure I wanted to share, because I didn’t know how people would react or if they would understand. Part of me wondered if it was disrespectful, or if I was a bad son.. but something told me that I needed to do it.

Only one other person there knew what happened, and she was in disbelief that I was functioning at all.

So, why did I DJ an event just hours after watching my mom pass away? And how?

Well, for one thing it was a distraction.. the days leading up were beyond intense and emotional, so doing something familiar was helpful.

It was easy. This event was one that didn’t require me to be “the fun guy”. It was background music for a client that I’ve played for many many times, so I could fade into the scenery and not worry about how I looked too much.

Third, and most importantly, it was music that my mom truly loved — House music. Classic House, Deep House, Afro House, Latin House.. My mom loved music as much, if not more than I do. It’s where all of this comes from.

So, I decided that I would dedicate my set that day to her.. 🕊️

It’s hard to explain the feeling while I played, perhaps because I was in shock and didn’t know it, but I definitely had tunnel vision the entire time. The room was full, but in my mind it was only me, my mom, and the music. Every song selection and transition had Mom in mind. And as the event came to a close, it made me sad. I made me feel like I was letting her go twice in the same day.. I don’t know how I held it together then, because I’m not as I type this now.

Anyway.. maybe that makes sense to you and maybe it doesn’t. It doesn’t matter. That was something I will always carry with me proudly. Because I know that an angel was there, dancing above me with tears of happiness in her eyes. Proud of her boy.

One week ago today (to the minute), our beautiful mother, Zinat, got her angel wings. 🕊️

I’ll never be able to express in this post what my mom was like and how she impacted others. It surprises me even now as I see and hear from others who share their experiences with us.

Mom was alot of things to alot of people, but the one thing every single person says is that she loved life, and ALWAYS had a smile on her face. That her spirit lifted others, and that they will never forget her, and how she made them feel.

Mom truly was selfless when it came to supporting others. Even at the expense of her own time, money, sometimes belongings, and emotional / mental health.. our mom always saw the good in others, even when everyone else thought they didn’t deserve it. She was truly an angel. She was our angel..

30+ years ago Mom had and beat cancer. 24 years of time added to the clock. Then in 2019, she developed breast cancer and geared up for war again. For 7 years our mom chose not only to fight, but to live life, with that smile on her face. Regardless of her passing, I can honestly say that I’m so proud and inspired by her strength as well as her ability to endure and never ever give up hope.

Our mom, our angel, Zinat Mirtabatabaee, kicked cancer’s ass for over 30 years, and transitioned on her time, at the most perfect time, surrounded by her “four kids”. She will always be the winner in my books. 💪🏼

One of the best parties of the year, and during this transition our loveable groom comes up for a song request. 😅

I didn't mind, I actually felt bad because I didn't process anything he said at the time and never played the request. 😂

Still an incredible day with an incredible team! 💛

The most spontaneous thing we've ever done. 18.5 hours from departure to return this morning. Here's the breakdown:

2:45pm : YVR (depart) 🛫
5:30pm : LAS (arrive) 🛬
6:15pm : Hotel Check-In 📍
7:00pm : Room Service 🍽️
8:00pm : @backstreetboys @spherevegas 🤯
10:30pm: Explore Vegas 🎲
12:10am : Back to Hotel 📍
1:30am : Sleep 😴
4:30am : Wake Up ⏰
5:00am : Hotel Check-Out 📍
5:15am : Uber to Airport 🚗
6:50am : LAS (depart) 🛫
9:15am : YVR (arrive) 🛬

Literally planned the day before for Camille's birthday. We're huge BSB fans and always wanted to see this show. Thank you to @vanessa.tam.weddings for the nudge (*ahem* shove 😂) and Camille's amazing parents for watching the kids. Couldn't have done it without you guys. 🙏🏼

A year ago today I had the honour and the utmost pleasure to DJ the wedding of some of my favourite people in the entire industry.

Stephanie and I have been working weddings together for 10 years now, and in that time I have become friends with not only her, but many of the talented ladies who work at @sweetheartevents as well.

A few years ago, @marcusveri entered the picture and everyone seemed to get a boost of energy. I got to know Marcus and Stephanie on a deeper level and they quickly became one of my favourite couples. They've been through alot, but they never let it affect their work or their relationships. It was all smiles and positivity every time I saw them. Kudos.

So when I was asked to be Steph + Marcus' wedding DJ (in the cutest email ever with my picture photoshopped in it) I couldn't say no. In fact I responded in kind (screenshots attached 😜).

Needless to say it was a wonderful day. Genuine intention with every decision they made from vendors to guests to decor to food to personalized and memorized drinks, and the list goes on.. but what hit home the most was the energy. Love in its truest form from everyone surrounding these two. It was beautiful.

So I'm wishing Stephanie and Marcus the happiest wedding anniversary, and a thousand more to come.
