A lot of the time, I don’t really do anything fancy — I just keep it simple. Mix in key, beatmatch, make the transition clean, and let the next song breathe.

No need to force an edited intro/outro into every track. As long as the mix sounds fluid, nothing gets awkwardly cut off — apparently a major pet peeve for dancers 😂 — and the songs are played the way they were originally produced, I’m good with that.

Sometimes the cleanest transition is the simplest one. No overthinking, no forcing it, and a lot less opportunity to mess something up and have people calling for you to get fired 😂 (wish I was kidding about this 😂🤦🏻‍♂️)

I don’t usually transition between these 2 songs like this, but I know they’re in key so they won’t clash, and they’re both popular songs that are “safe” to play, so I shouldn’t get an adverse reaction 😂

What’s worse than playing 3 Jensen songs in a row? Playing the same Jensen song 3 times in one night 😂

Sometimes you think everything is finally going smoothly… and then something happens that’s completely out of your control. You can either let it ruin the night, or laugh it off, move forward, and still have a good time.

At the end of the day, DJing is supposed to be fun. Yeah, it’s something we get paid to do, but nights like this are also a reminder not to take every mistake or awkward moment too seriously.

Shoutout to @b.a.d_frankie for playing at our Friday social for the first time. I told you it was a tough crowd 😂 but you survived!

And I definitely wasn’t mistake-free either. I managed to mess up the audio recording of our live set because of an oversight on my end 🤦‍♂️

So yeah… mistakes were made all around. But sometimes those end up being the nights you look back on and laugh about the most.

When you’ve practiced enough and built up a solid arsenal of go-to songs and transitions, DJing starts to feel a lot more natural and stress-free. You’re not overthinking every move—you already know what works, so you can focus more on reading the room, feeling the energy, and keeping the dance floor moving.

That’s when all the practice really pays off and transitions like this start to feel almost automatic. 🎚️👌

Crossfader vs. channel faders — which do you prefer for transitions? 🎚️

I originally learned to mix almost entirely with the crossfader, so moving from one track to the next feels pretty natural: slide it from left to right and keep it moving.

Lately I’ve been experimenting with using the left and right channel faders instead. Instead of making one movement with the crossfader, I’m bringing one channel up while gradually bringing the other one down. It definitely takes a little more coordination, but I feel like it gives me more control over the blend and can make certain transitions sound a little smoother.

At the same time, I still feel way more efficient with the crossfader simply because that’s what I’ve built the most muscle memory with.

I’m curious what other DJs think: Do you prefer using the crossfader, channel faders, or does it depend on the type of transition? 🎧

One of the challenges of DJing every week is finding the balance between the songs everyone knows and loves, and keeping the set from feeling too predictable.

The familiar songs will always work, but if you never switch things up, the night can start sounding the same week after week. So I always make a conscious effort to mix more newer music into my sets while still keeping the crowd favorites in rotation. 🔥

This night was a little different too—I had been up since early that morning, never got my usual pre-gig nap, and was basically running on pure adrenaline by the end 😂. But even exhausted, I still wanted to challenge myself to play a different set instead of falling back on the same songs again.

Keeping things fresh—for the dancers and for myself. 🎧🔥

Roofchata Wednesday is almost here! Most people don’t even know where the DJ booth is at 230 Fifth. You see people having a great time on the dance floor but will never know we exist! It’s time people know that #djlivesmatter 😂

In a setting like this, you’re not only playing for bachata dancers. You also have tourists and walk-ins who may be experiencing bachata for the first time, so reading the room and choosing music everyone can connect with is key. When you understand your crowd and know what has worked before, the transitions feel effortless. 😎

When it comes to DJing bachata, it’s not just about smooth transitions. I like adding sounds and effects in moments dancers may—or may not—expect, keeping the set creative and unpredictable.

DJing isn’t just work; it’s supposed to be fun too. Keeping the dancers happy matters, but so does enjoying the process and putting your own personality behind the music.

Not every opinion deserves your attention. Some people will focus on the negative no matter what you do. Take in what helps you grow, leave the rest behind, and never let anyone take the fun or creativity out of what you love.
