Photos from my solo exhibition "It just keeps getting better" at @casalu_sur on May 30th, 2026!

I spent my time at Casa Lü Sur making popup book pages, ceramic wall hangings, and a mosaic with found tiles and tiles I created.

Exhibition text by @phiopsia

In the work of Mayetta Steier, joy manifests as a tangible force that courses through each
piece. Her practice, rooted in ceramics and extended onto paper and other media, constructs an imaginary realm where fables unfold in a continuous present, without fixed resolution. Here, meaning does not precede the encounter, but rather springs forth from
the very act of being together: animals and characters engender messages through their
interaction, in an enunciation that moves through the body and through shared presence.

A universal symbol of delight traverses the exhibition: the balloon. This element, which the
artist has drawn since childhood in the form of a cat-balloon, appears as a persistent motif
binding remembrance and celebration. The balloons ascend, float, multiply in the hands of many who offer them, hold them, or let them go. They are at once fairground object, playful levitation, and mirror of an inner state.

For this exhibition, Steier integrates local motifs with natural ease: maize, ever-present in the surroundings of her residency at Casa Lü Sur, is woven into her visual vocabulary without disrupting the logic of her own world. During her stay, she created an outdoor
mural in situ that converses directly with the space, adding to her repertoire of intimate symbols the bowl of pozole and the little piggy bank—domestic objects that bear collective and affective memory. In her work, the coexistence of the imagined and the quotidian renders the familiar extraordinary.

The figures emerge through encounters and sudden apparitions—pop-ups—that transform the space into a stage of revelations. Bodies levitate, mirror one another, seek one another out. Each work extends an invitation to partake in a celebration that neither explains nor concludes, but rather sustains the luminous instant of what unfolds when beings open themselves to exchange. by @djyetta
