The Andaman & Nicobar Islands are usually remembered for Kala Pani and the British. Far fewer people know what happened when the Japanese arrived during World War II.

Forced labour, starvation, mass executions, and sexual slavery followed.

Some history gets forgotten because it’s complicated. This is one of those stories.

1. Remnants of the bunkers that the Japanese occupation built in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands
2. The infamous Cellular Jail, referred to as Kala Pani
3. Japanese troops disembarking on Ross Island, 23 March 1942
4. Chinese and Malayan girls forcibly taken from Penang by the Japanese to work as 'comfort girls' for the troops
5. Dr. Diwan Singh, the renowned Punjabi poet
6. The first members of the Allied forces to land at Port Blair in the Andaman Islands being welcomed by the local population in 1945
7. Netaji portrayed on the cover of the Japanese magazine "Shashin Shuho" (Photographic Weekly), in a 1944 issue highlighting the Indian National Army
