sunlight poured through the ocean surface 3ft above this perfectly aligned sea anemone and created a rainbow iridescent effect on it which really made its tentacles stand out.

Sea Anemones (ah-nem-uh-nees) were named after Anemone flowers, a family of lovely, terrestrial flowers found around much of the world. Looking at colourful Sea Anemones swaying in the ocean current, one can see why they were compared to a garden full of beautiful flowers. However, unlike their namesake, Sea Anemones are in fact fearsome, carnivorous animals! Animals that can move and swim and will use their stinging tentacles to fight each other, stun their prey, and even swallow fish whole. While not all Sea Anemones are fearsome fighters, there are more than you might think and they are not to be messed with.

Ucluelet is the anglicized version of the Nuu-chah-nulth word Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ (means Ucluelet First Nations). This has commonly been translated as ‘People of the Safe Harbour’ or historically ‘Dwellers of the Protected Place Inside’. The Ucluth peninsula has been inhabited by the Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ as far back as 4,300+ years ago.

Kelp forest in Ucluelet, BC. These underwater forests are critical for ocean life. When freediving kelp is the first indicators I look for in a prime spot to snorkel/dive around. I often see lots of life around these areas, not only critters under the water but I usually notice sea lions, seals, and otters nearby too.

Yoho National Park is located within the traditional lands of the Ktunaxa and Secwépemc peoples.

I took this photo September 2023 while camping at lake O’hara. Pictured here is Mt. Huber iconic mountain scape during some morning fog after a fresh dusting of the seasons first snowfall.
