Did you know today is Dante Day?
A national holiday in Italy, Dantedì celebrates the Italian poet, writer and philosopher Dante Alighieri. We’ll be delving into his most famous work, The Divine Comedy, at the Meighen Forum this season. Florentine artist Daniele Bartolini will perform nine full cantos – a rare opportunity to hear this medieval narrative poem recited in its original language.

In 2022, I had the joy of bringing "The Spectators’ Odyssey" to Florence, to the Arcetri Astrophysical Observatory: a magical place in the hills where Galileo Galilei spent the last years of his life. 🔭✨

I’m thrilled to share that our chapter “Performing astrophysics: the spectator as a voyager” has just been published in a book on theatre and science by Portugal's Coimbra University Press. In the show, professional performers and astrophysicists from the observatory worked side by side, interacting with audience members on a journey through space, memory and imagination.

Thank you to Rossella Spiga, Antonella Gasperini and Daniele Galli for this beautiful collaboration, and to Coimbra University Press in Portugal for publishing it.

Nel 2022 ho avuto la gioia di portare The Spectators’ Odyssey a Firenze, all’Osservatorio Astrofisico di Arcetri: un luogo magico sulle colline dove Galileo Galilei trascorse gli ultimi anni della sua vita. 🔭✨

Sono felicissimo di condividere che è appena uscito il nostro capitolo “Performing astrophysics: the spectator as a voyager”, in un volume su teatro e scienza pubblicato da Coimbra University Press in Portogallo. Nello spettacolo, attori professionisti e astrofisici dell’osservatorio hanno lavorato fianco a fianco, interagendo con il pubblico in un viaggio tra spazio, ricordo e immaginazione.

Ieri sera Dante’s Inferno: A Fusion of Text, Music and Thought ha portato al Teatro Niccolini un viaggio dentro la Divina Commedia capace di attraversare i secoli e parlare al presente.

I versi di Dante hanno preso vita nell’interpretazione di Daniele Bartolini, accompagnati dal testo e dalla narrazione di Donato Santeramo e dalle musiche e dal sound design dal vivo di Andrea Gozzi.

Parola, teatro e suono si sono incontrati in un’esperienza immersiva che ci ha riportato nel cuore dell’Inferno dantesco e delle sue domande ancora così vicine al nostro tempo.

Last night, Dante’s Inferno: A Fusion of Text, Music and Thought brought to Teatro Niccolini a journey into the Divine Comedy, spanning the centuries while speaking directly to the present.
Dante’s verses came to life through Daniele Bartolini’s performance, accompanied by the text and narration of Donato Santeramo and the live music and sound design of Andrea Gozzi.
Words, theatre and sound came together in an immersive experience that took us into the heart of Dante’s Inferno and its questions, which still feel remarkably close to our own time.

FR - Une pièce immersive pour 20 spectateurs max, qui suivent un concierge dans un parcours déambulatoire à travers une école. Ce qui commence comme un travail rigoureux et solitaire glisse peu à peu vers l'onirique — une œuvre sans paroles où le concierge devient symbolique, mythologique, tel un Sisyphe moderne, allégorie de la condition humaine.

ENG - An immersive theatre experience for max 20 audience members, following a lone janitor through a school's empty hallways on his nightly rounds. What begins as naturalistic, isolating blue-collar labour slips into dreamlike disquiet — a silent solo performance where the janitor becomes symbolic, even mythical: a modern Sisyphus, allegory of the human condition.

Un vero cerchio che si chiude, per me e per lo spettacolo. Tornare a Firenze con questa creazione sull’Inferno di Dante. 🔥Non riesco esattamente a descrivere l’emozione.
Tornare a casa,
con questo spettacolo,
nato e prodotto dall’altra parte del mondo,
dedicato a Dante,
da fiorentino che è partito,
significa più di quanto io possa riuscire a dire.
L’8 ottobre al Teatro Niccolini, grazie a @firenzeonstage_official sotto la direzione artistica di Hershey Felder.

Last Saturday we concluded our beautiful Dantean journey at the @stratfest with nine sold-out performances, fulfilling a dream I've had since I was a young adolescent. It was wonderful to finish with Consul General Luca Zelioli among our guests, alongside all the fellow travelers: @dr_donatosanteramo @andrea_guz_gozzi @danyabuona, Rino Caputo, @christophib, and the Director Antoni Cimolino. Alla prossima!

Sometimes life is so full between work and family that I don’t have time to share all the beautiful things and new artistic endeavours this summer has brought. A month and a half ago now, we debuted with Dante’s Inferno: A Fusion of Text, Music and Thought, commissioned and presented at the @stratfest as part of the Meighen Forum. It was a magnificent journey welcomed by three sold-out performances with the exceptional Donato Santeramo @dr_donatosanteramo, Andrea Gozzi @andrea_guz_gozzi andrea_guz_gozzi, Danya Buonastella @danyabuona and Christoph Ibrahim @christophib. We have six more shows - currently sold out - on August 28, 29, 30 and September 11, 12, 13. I can’t wait to go back to them and recite the ancient Florentine words of Dante.

Between July and early August, I shot in Florence (and Grassina) my first feature film “Un giorno in più - Bonus Day” with the “Fab Two” Kejd Kuqo and Danya Buonastella. With the fantastic participation of Alessio Martinoli @alessiomp and many of my family members. The editing process begins now.

And tomorrow debuts my and Vincent Leblanc Beaudoin’s show Le Concierge at @summerworksfun with the run being completely sold out. Long live theater that mixes genres, independent cinema and environmental performance.

Last night something special happened in Toronto. An Oak Tree by Tim Crouch. A piece that everyone should experience. Especially anyone involved in making live work.
When I was twenty-something years old I saw an Italian production of #anoaktreebytimcrouch presented by Accademia Degli Artefatti with the translation of Luca Scarlini and returned three times to see it at #teatrostudiokrypton. The show is one of the pieces that influenced me the most as a young theatre maker. It opened up a new frontier. It opened up a new possibility of doing which I knew I was somehow seeking but didn’t know existed. So much of who I am as a theatre maker is owed to this piece.
To see it on the other side of the ocean performed by @thistimcrouch himself (with a fantastic guest performer Luke Kirby) and in its original language after reading it many times in @danyabuona and my “Play 1” book was beyond mesmerizing. True magic of timelines colliding.
Thank you Tim Crouch for making this deeply inspiring piece of theatre that gives meaning to all of us theatre makers who go every night into a theatre to pursue irrepeatable magic. That captures the essence of theatre and creating work that is truly: Live. Thank you. And thank you @luminatofestival for presenting this work.
